Has anyone else met our 'friendly' kestrels on Westhay? 👋😄
A pair of sister kestrels have been spotted on Westhay, appearing to be very comfortable and confident around people, watching over the carpark and perching on signs! 🤯
Stranger still, these kestrels have been seen feeding on dragonflies on the wing - an unusual behaviour for kestrels, one much more commonly seen in hobbies! Perhaps this young pair have picked up a trick or two from a fellow falcon of the Avalon Marshes!
Have you met these confident kestrels? 🤔

Have you been spotting fungi in Somerset this autumn? 🍂
November is a brilliant time to look a little closer at the woodland floor. Among the fallen leaves, under trees, on dead wood and in the dewy grass you might spot bright red fly agaric or colourful waxcaps! 🍄🟫
Fungi are a vital part of healthy habitats. They help break down natural materials and return nutrients to the soil, supporting life both above the soil and beneath our feet.
If you spot a mushroom, admire it where it grows, take a photograph and leave it undisturbed. And remember, never eat a wild mushroom unless it has been identified by an expert. 🙅
Tag us in your fungi photos!! 🏷️

Autumn is the season of history and folklore! 🍂🎃
We've been digging though dusty history books to find some of Somerset's old words for our favourite wildlife. 🐭
Which ones do you think we should bring back?? 🤔

Today daylight savings ends & the clocks go back 🕒🌇
Here in Somerset, we will experience our first sunsets before 5pm this week.
But, don't fret! The changing seasons are just another important reminder that we are part of nature and feel the colder darker nights just as much as the species around us.
Not to mention, winter in Somerset is one of the most vibrant seasons to spot wildlife! Overwintering birds like widgeon, tufted duck and shovelers will begin to appear in our wetlands and starlings are arriving across the county!
Don't forget to tag us in your autumnal Somerset photos - we love to see them!

How cute is this little guy!? 🐭💦
This is a water shrew! Sent to us by a follower @emilyheckscher! 📸
The water shrew is our largest shrew, and as the name suggests, lives almost entirely in wetland habitats like streams, ponds and reedbeds. They can be identified by their distinct dark back and white undersides.
But there's one fact about water shrews that REALLY sets them apart from any other British mammal...
They're venomous! 🤯
Water shrews use their venomous bite to immobilise frogs and small fish. Tackling prey up to 60 times heavier than itself, including newts, frogs, crustaceans and snails! 😮
Emily told us she keeps her garden wild! Leaving areas 'rough' to encourage wildlife - and it's paying off! She's spotted grass snakes and a stoat, birds and pond life. She's seen plenty of shrews and voles which feed the predators such as tawny owls! This particular shrew caught her eye due to it's distinct colouration! 🤩
Have you ever spotted a water shrew? 👀

Did you hear? We have our bank-note winners! 💵🥳
The four species set to feature on our future bank notes are:
Atlantic puffin, barn owl, buff-tailed bumblebee and European hedgehog! 🦔
What great choices! Barn owl, bumblebee and hedgehog all topped polls in the public vote and the Atlantic puffin was chosen to represent our diverse marine ecosystems! 🐟
We don't yet know which species will be featured on which banknote - but we can't wait to see how accurate our mock-ups may be!
Did your favourite species make the cut? 🤔 Let us know in the comments...

Together with @exmoornp and the support of @AvivaUK, we've purchased 130 acres of land to create more temperate rainforest habitat. 🌳🌧️
This transformative project will see a new 50 hectares woodland comprised of oak, hazel, lime and alder. It will connect smaller isolated areas to larger ancient woodland to create an extensive and wildlife rich temperate rainforest!
This ambitious native woodland-expansion project is inspired by nature, designed and developed by ENPA and created by skilled local contractors, will also need help from volunteers as it takes form. 💚

Uncover the secrets of Chancellor's Farm's dry stone walls with our brilliant dry stone walling volunteers. ☀️
Dry stone walls are an important part of Chancellor’s Farm’s history – and they’re full of surprises! Our volunteers work hard to keep these walls in great condition, providing a vital habitat for wildlife and along the way uncovering fossils, old bones and even slow worms sheltering beneath the stones. 🪱
