Or no? When your baby breaks off a piece of food, it can feel really stressful, but we promise it’s all a part of the learning process. Your baby is learning invaluable skills that teach them how to chew and using the many protective reflexes they have in place to prevent an emergency, including their gag reflex. But maybe gagging scares you? This is totally normal. Understanding the difference between gagging and choking is important and can actually help calm your fears about your baby eating solid food. 🥦 ➡️ To learn more about how this all works, tap the link or bio to get the Solid Starts app, where you can read all of our guides and watch all of the videos from our pediatric pros. You’ve got this, but we’re here to help you through it. 🤍 #blwtips #blw #startingsolids 02 Nov 2026 Happening today: Take our Readiness Quiz during our Monster Mash Sale! Annual subscriptions are 30% off for a limited time🎃🛒 While some pediatricians still advise starting babies on infant cereal around 4 months old, this is outdated advice: as of 2020, the American Academy of Pediatrics, U.S. National Institutes for Health, and World Health Organization all recommend waiting until your baby shows signs of developmental readiness to introduce solids–which tend to show up around 6 months old. Why? It’s critical that solids not replace breastmilk or formula in the early months, and research has not found any nutritional benefit of starting before readiness signs for most babies. Six months of age is also when baby’s iron needs begin to increase, so a perfect overlap of skill and changing nutritional need. So what are the signs of readiness? Babies who are showing all of the below developmental milestones have the foundational skills needed to safely explore solid foods. ✔️Sitting: Baby is able to sit with a little bit of support ✔️Head Control: Baby is able to hold head upright and steady for duration of meal ✔️Reach & Grab: Baby is able to pick up objects and easily bring them to their mouth while sitting ✔️Interest: Baby intently watches you eat, mouths for food, or leans forward for it *Note that babies who are high risk for developing food allergies may be advised by their medical provider to begin allergen exposure as early as 4 months. We recommend following a responsive spoon feeding approach when introducing these tastes. If you need help getting started, the Solid Starts App walks you through the safe introduction of solid food, day by day. It’s 30% off TODAY! 🎉🛒 #blw #babyledweaning #firstfoods 01 Nov 2026 Not all families will offer their child candy, but many will. This post is for anyone who wants to know how to safely celebrate candy-themed holidays or just be informed of candy risks any time of year. 🎃 Halloween can be tricky when you consider the size, shape, and consistency of many treats. Add in the running around, low light and general excitement and the risk of choking increases. But there are a few things you can do to minimize the risk of choking and ensure it’s a fun holiday for all. Swipe to read more. 🎃While many families choose to hold off on things like candy until a bit later in toddlerhood, we believe there is so much value in sharing holiday traditions with your toddler. 🍬Many candies are high risk for choking due to their size, firm texture, and slippery nature, so choose wisely to decrease risk. 🍫Many candies contain common allergens aside from nuts and dairy. Some candies contain egg, soy & wheat, as well so always be sure to check the labels before allowing your child to consume. 🥚Many individually wrapped candies, do not contain any list of ingredients, so always be sure you’ve ruled out allergies before offering or if your child has allergies, know ingredients of any food you offer. ⚠️ Teal Pumpkins: Children with food allergies can still enjoy candy centered holidays. Plan ahead to have safe treats for them at home and do a swap after trick-or-treating for safe options. Also be on the lookout for homes that participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project as this often indicates they are providing allergen-free options. Though always use your best judgement and check labels for yourself to be sure. ➡️🎃 You can read more about Halloween Food for Babies and Toddlers and get allergen friendly options in the Solid Starts app. This article is free for a limited time! 🎃 #toddlersafety#halloweencandy #babysfirsthalloween #blw #candysafety 31 Oct 2026 Starting Solids at 6 months? 🥦🐟🍓 These are a few of the 50 foods our pediatric feeding experts want on your radar. 👀 Because when it comes to your baby’s first bites, there’s no perfect first food, but there are some that offer tremendous benefits when your baby begins. Let us clarify 🧂 While it’s important to limit sodium in your baby’s diet, a little added salt from time to time, especially when it means sharing a family meal, can have benefits too. The key is understanding how much is too much and how to strike the right balance. From naturally occurring sodium to added salt, knowing the safe amounts for your baby is important. 💬 Comment SALT and we’ll send you our full article. 📱 The article is available inside the Solid Starts app for FREE for the next 24 hours. No subscription needed to read it. ✔️This article and many others, written by our team of pediatric experts, are always accessible with your annual subscription to the app or when you start a free 7 day trial at the link in bio. #babyledweaning #firstfoods #solidstarts #blw #6monthsold 2,332 likes · 943 comments · 28 Oct 2026 🌮 Tacos for a 6-month-old?! Yes, really! When your baby starts solids, meals like tacos might seem a little too complicated (or completely inappropriate!) for a baby at 6 months. But remember: Your baby doesn’t need a completely different meal from the rest of the family. They just need the same ingredients prepared in a way that’s appropriate for their age. Take taco night, for example. 🥑 Avocado can be offered in boats or wedges that are easy for little hands to grasp. 🍅 Tomatoes & sweet potatoes can be offered as large wedges. 🥩 Ground beef can be served crumbled over something scoopable or chicken can be served in strips. 🫑 Peppers can be cooked until soft and offered in appropriately sizes. Skin can stay in. 🌮 Tortillas can be served in strips with mashed black beans spread on top. The list goes on and on… That’s the beauty of baby-led weaning. It’s not about creating elaborate meals or cooking twice. It’s about learning how to adapt your meal into one your baby can eat too. Of course, preparation matters. Always consider texture, shape, allergens, size, choking risks and your baby’s individual feeding skills. Same meal. Same table. #SameSame ➡️ Not sure how to do this? Start your free trial of the Solid Starts App at the link in our bio to check sizes & recipes. #BabyLedWeaning #BLW #StartingSolids #SolidStarts 697 likes · 10 comments · 26 Oct 2026 Anyone else’s baby have expensive taste? 🙃🫐🍓 #babyledweaning #firstfoods #solidstarts #blw #6monthsold 4,893 likes · 23 comments · 24 Oct 2026
