Tonight’s Hunter’s Moon! 🌕🎃 Captured through my 5-inch refractor telescope, October’s magnificent Hunter’s Moon lights up the autumn sky. But why is it called the Hunter’s Moon? 🍂 Traditionally, the Hunter’s Moon is the first full Moon following the Harvest Moon. After the autumn harvest, fields were cleared, making wildlife easier to spot. The bright moonlight gave hunters additional time to hunt and gather food in preparation for the long winter months. The Moon was absolutely beautiful tonight. 🌙 I was lucky enough to capture a plane transiting directly in front of the Moon—a @jetblue JBU1880 flight, captured at 8:44 PM in West Richmond, VA. ✈️🌕 The last image is an HDR composite of the Moon, with the plane added from the original transit video. I used @transitchaser to anticipate the transit, and it worked incredibly well! Enjoy! 🌙✨ #moon #space #planetransit 25 Aug 2026

First Quarter Moon 🌗🌙 Tonight’s Moon captured right at first quarter, half illuminated, half in shadow, with the terminator revealing an incredible amount of surface detail. First quarter is always one of my favorite phases to image because the low-angle sunlight along the terminator makes the craters, mountains, and lunar terrain stand out dramatically. The Cone Nebula (also known as the Christmas Tree Nebula) is a striking pillar of interstellar gas and dust located in the constellation Monoceros, about 2,700 light-years from Earth. Part of the larger NGC 2264 region, it spans approximately 7 light-years and is shaped by intense radiation and stellar winds from nearby young, massive stars. Its iconic cone-like structure is a stunning example of cosmic sculpting in the universe. I captured this jewel in the bottle 3 skies of Williamsport, Tennessee. I looked at the Moon from my telescope tonight, this is the exact view that I saw. I created this image by merging two exposures together to produce a high dynamic range image of the Moon. I added an artificial halo to imitate the eye piece effect. #theMoon #moon 25 Dec 2025
