The computer virus that sent love letters around the world
On May 4, 2000, millions of people received an email with the subject line “ILOVEYOU.”
Attached was what appeared to be a love letter, but opening it unleashed a computer worm that rapidly spread through email contacts. Within hours, the virus had disrupted businesses, governments and organisations around the world
It caused billions of dollars in estimated damage and became one of the most notorious cyberattacks in internet history. Investigators traced the worm to the Philippines, where a young computer student became the main suspect.

When Diesel opened a fake counterfeit shop
In 2018, Diesel pulled off one of the cleverest stunts in fashion marketing. The brand secretly opened a tiny shop on New York’s Canal Street, an area famous for counterfeit designer goods
The shop sold clothing bearing the misspelled logo “DEISEL,” making the products look like cheap knockoffs. Customers could buy shirts and other items at bargain prices without necessarily realising that Diesel itself was behind the store. When the truth was revealed, the supposedly take merchandise turned out to be part of a genuine limited-edition fashion campaign

The video game company that buried its unsold games in the desert
In 1983, video game company Atari was struggling with enormous amounts of unsold merchandise following a collapse in the American gaming market
According to a tamous story, the company secretly buried truckloads of video game cartridges in a landfill in New Mexico, including copies of the notoriously unpopular E.T. game. For decades, the story became an internet urban legend, with people debating whether the burial had actually happened
Then, in 2014, an excavation team dug into the desert landfill and discovered real Atari cartridges. Some of the recovered games were even preserved by the Smithsonian

On November 22, 1987, television viewers in Chicago witnessed something incredibly disturbing
Two separate TV broadcasts were suddenly interrupted by a strange masked figure impersonating the fictional character Max Headroom. The person appeared in front of a moving striped background, making bizarre movements and speaking almost incomprehensibly
One interruption occurred during the news, while another took place during an episode of Doctor Who. Engineers were unable to immediately stop the second intrusion.
Despite an investigation, the identity of the person responsible was never established. The footage remains one of television’s strangest unsolved mysteries

On December 16, 1997, an episode of Pokémon aired in Japan and caused one of the strangest medical incidents in television history
During the episode, a sequence of rapidly flashing red and blue lights triggered symptoms in hundreds of viewers. Some experienced photosensitive epileptic seizures, while others reported headaches, nausea and dizziness. A total of 685 people were taken to hospital by ambulance, most of them children
The incident caused a nationwide controversy, and the episode was never broadcast again. It also helped change safety practices around flashing images on television

Deep in the ocean, some male anglerfish do something almost unbelievable when they find a mate. They’re often tiny compared with the females, and rather than simply mating and swimming away, they bite onto the female’s body and never leave
In certain species, their tissues and blood vessels eventually fuse together, turning the male into a permanent attachment. He receives nutrients from the female while providing sperm for reproduction
Some females have even been discovered carrying multiple attached males. It’s one of the strangest reproductive systems in the animal kingdom

For decades, scientists were baffled by rocks in California’s Death Valley that appeared to move across the desert completely on their own
Some weighed hundreds of kilograms and left long trails in the dry lakebed, yet nobody had seen them moving. People suggested everything from magnetic forces to supernatural activity
But researchers eventually discovered the explanation: during rare winter conditions, thin sheets of ice form around the rocks, and gentle winds push the floating ice, slowly moving the stones across the muddy surface.

In August 1945, a Japanese man named Tsutomu Yamaguchi survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima while visiting the city for work. Despite suffering burns and injuries, he managed to return home to Nagasaki
But just three days later, the United States dropped a second atomic bomb on his hometown.
Incredibly, Yamaguchi survived that explosion too. He lived until 2010, reaching the age of 93, and became officially recognised by Japan as a survivor of both atomic bombings. Imagine surviving one of the most devastating explosions in human history, only to experience another just three days later

Beneath the nearly abandoned town of Centralia, Pennsylvania, an underground coal fire has been burning since 1962
The fire spread through abandoned mine workings beneath the community, releasing dangerous gases and causing parts of the ground to become unstable
Over the following decades, most residents relocated as the risks became impossible to ignore. Roads cracked, steam escaped through the earth, and entire neighbourhoods disappeared. The most unsettling part is that underground coal fires can continue burning for decades, potentially even centuries, because extinguishing them is extremely difficult

After the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986, workers discovered a terrifying mass beneath the destroyed reactor
Nicknamed the Elephant’s Foot because of its strange appearance, it was made from melted nuclear fuel mixed with reactor materials and concrete. When first discovered, the material emitted dangerously high levels of radiation, making prolonged exposure potentially fatal
Over time, its radioactivity has decreased, but the mass remains hazardous. It’s a chilling reminder of the extreme temperatures and destructive forces unleashed during the disaster

Deep in the Pacific Ocean lives one of the strangest creatures ever discovered - the barreleye fish
Living around 600-800 metres underwater, this bizarre animal has a completely transparent, fluid-filled dome covering its head, allowing you to see its bright green eyes inside
Those eyes can actually rotate, allowing the fish to look upwards through its own skull to spot prey, then forwards when it’s ready to eat. Scientists first described the species in 1939, but it wasn’t until 2009 that researchers revealed how its unusual eyes worked. It looks like something straight out of an alien movie, yet it’s completely real

In 1962, something bizarre happened at a girls’ school in Tanzania
Three students suddenly began laughing uncontrollably, and within weeks, 95 out of 159 pupils were affected. Some experienced repeated episodes of laughing, crying and extreme anxiety, sometimes lasting for days
The outbreak became so disruptive that the school was forced to close. But things got even stranger when similar symptoms appeared in nearby villages and other schools, affecting hundreds of people
Doctors couldn’t identify an infection or physical cause, and researchers believe it was an example of mass psychogenic illness, potentially triggered by stress
