Almost a year ago, I shared a sweet video of Huddy playing soccer with his teammates. ⚽️ To our complete surprise, David Beckham commented on the video. 🤯 A few months later, a package showed up at our door with a letter from David Beckham and two signed Inter Miami jerseys for Huddy. We couldn’t believe it. Then a couple of months ago, Huddy wanted to sing “Mr. David” a Happy Birthday song so we sent David Beckham a little video of Huddy singing. And now the best surprise ever! Huddy just got a letter from David Beckham inviting him to Miami to see an Inter Miami FC Soccer game!! We are beyond excited! I’m so humbled that David Beckham even knows who Huddy is let alone is inviting him to Miami. As a parent of a child with Down syndrome, you always hope your child is seen for who they are. The fact that someone has made Huddy feel so special is something we will never forget. I can’t wait to share all the details about our visit and Huddy’s excitement watching the match. Being a mom to a child with Down syndrome comes with certain challenges. One of the hardest parts for me is knowing that no matter what I do or what I say, there will always be those who only see Hudson as a burden. It’s why the small, sweet moments mean so much… A preschool peer reaching for his hand. A soccer coach going out of their way to include him. A stranger stopping to say how beautiful his smile is. Unless you’re in this space, it’s hard to explain how moments like those can completely change your day and give you so much hope for your child’s future. It’s also why my mama heart felt so incredibly full when something unexpected happened. About a month ago, a package arrived out of the blue. Inside were two soccer jerseys from @intermiamicf for Huddy, both signed, along with a handwritten note from David Beckham. We couldn’t believe it. And while to some it might seem like “just a package,” to us, it meant so much more. Because it’s never really about the gift.  It’s about your child being seen for who they are. To a mom who wonders daily whether the world will accept her child, who advocates fiercely for inclusion and who just wants her son to feel valued… this meant everything. But seriously… Don’t be sorry. Huddy might have some extra challenges but he sure brings a lot of extra joy too. My life is better because of him. Our family is better because of him. This world is a better place with him in it. Down syndrome isn’t a reason to be sorry. Instead people should be sorry for a world that still judges based on appearances. A world that sees my child and instantly assumes that he can’t. A world that often believes those who are different are less worthy. Yes, there are things to be sorry about. The way Messi kept looking down at Huddy with the biggest smile on his face made my mama heart want to burst.
