If AI is going to reshape society, what questions should we be asking about it, and who gets to ask them?
At Oakland Tech Week, The Tech We Want facilitated two fishbowl conversations for Tech x Oak powered by Omidyar Network. The first, with Arnell Calderon of ColorStack, George Ashford of Young People’s Alliance and Mayu Takeuchi, looked at how young people are in conversation with AI.
Then on the second we looked at what it takes to build more of the tech we want through California policy, joined by Assembly Member Buffy Wicks, Sacha H. of the The Tech Oversight Project, Aissa Canchola- Banez of Protect Borrowers and Samantha Gordon of TechEquity.
Not everyone in the room was a coder or an engineer. We had lawyers who are fighting to develop guardrails on AI, parents dreading the day their kid asks for an Instagram account, and builders who think beyond the unicorn thesis of venture-backed tech. And we had policymakers who were eager to hear from the grassroots what good policy looks like for those most affected by it.
That’s the work we’re here for: bring together the people living the fight for a tech that serves us all, take the bets no one else will take, and continue to build toward a future where responsible tech is the default.

Technology is NOT inevitable. Bold statement?
Earlier this month, Just BE and Tercero Solutions hosted Beyond Inevitability: Shaping Technology with Cultural Wisdom as part of Oakland Tech Week.
We created this space to challenge the idea that we have to accept whatever technology is handed to us and simply adapt.
As one of our participants put it:
“People say AI is inevitable. Everyone is doing it, so you should too. It’s too big to change. It’s not going away any time soon… which is probably what people also said about slavery.”
Whew. Powerful. That stayed with us.
Inevitability is not how our ancestors moved historically in the U.S., and it is not how we have to move now.
Together, we explored real examples of communities already making different choices about technology: who owns it, whose knowledge and data it uses, who gets to make decisions, who benefits, and what accountability looks like when harm happens.
And the room brought so much to the conversation.
Some people came for their own learning. Others came thinking about the organizations and communities they work with. But across the room, there was a shared desire to make sure technology serves our families and communities without losing our humanity in the process.
There were vulnerable conversations, lots of curiosity, shared stories, and potential solutions to problems our Oakland community faces today.
And you know it was a good event when the room was filled with laughter! 💜
As our facilitator Kim Tercero reflected, we hope people left with practical ways to become better stewards of technology and will carry these conversations into their personal lives, organizations, and communities.
Thank you to everyone who joined us, to Kim and Tercero Solutions for co-creating this experience with us, and to Oakland Tech Week for making space for the conversation.
Technology is shaped by people. That means we get to ask who is shaping it, what values are shaping it, and what role we want to play.

During #OaklandTechWeek, we brought together organizers, technologists, journalists, and movement partners for #BuildingBeyondBigTech, an afternoon that convened Bay Area organizers to shape a just tech future for our communities, not neighboring Silicon Valley.
From surveillance and AI to corporate power and community-led alternatives, we bridged fights across the Bay, strategized intervention points ahead of the midterms, and imagined community-led alternatives.
And just one week later, Oakland passed a 45-day moratorium on new data centers, underscoring the importance of these convos.
