Can looking closely at photographs change what we see, know, and feel about history? šŸ“ø Listen as Japanese artist Masaki Fujihata shares the meaning behind the exhibition’s title and how he invites visitors to become photographers themselves through augmented reality (AR). By stepping into historic photographs and seeing through a new lens, visitors can explore how photography shapes our understanding of history and the forced incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. Experience the interactive augmented reality installation along new Bay Area elements and a never-before-seen three-screen video featuring local residents. šŸŽŸļø ā€œBeHere / 1942ā€ is now on view at OMCA through December 27. Plan your visit at the link in bio! #JapaneseAmericanHistory #BeHere1942 #AugmentedReality #MuseumExhibition #ArtExhibition 27 Oct 2026 You can actually step inside these photographs. I visited the new BeHere / 1942: A New Lens on the Japanese American Incarceration exhibition at the Oakland Museum of California, and it gives you a different way to experience history. The exhibit looks at historic photographs documenting the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II, including photos connected to Oakland and Bay Area communities. Some are on the same street where the museum is located today! What really stood out to me was the augmented reality experience. And no, it’s not AI! Artist Masaki Fujihata filmed real actors in Tokyo and Los Angeles, including elders who lived through the incarceration camps and descendants of people who were incarcerated. There’s also a new three-screen video featuring local residents, including people connected to this history and others affected by current anti-immigrant policies. And there’s more to explore, from the rest of the museum to the exhibition merch in the gift shop. šŸ“ Oakland Museum of California šŸ“… BeHere / 1942 is on view through December 27, 2026 If you’re looking for something meaningful and different to do in Oakland, add this to your list. Would you check this exhibit out? šŸ‘€ And who would you bring with you? Save this for your next Oakland day and send it to someone who loves museums, history, or unique Bay Area experiences. #VisitCalifornia #Visitoakland #ThingsToDoInOakland #ThingstodointheBayArea #Museums 13 Oct 2026 ✨ Just like magicā€¦āœØĀ  You can upgrade your museum visit for free with @bloombergconnects! Drawing from historical photographs, Liu brought stories of displacement and belonging to life with vulnerability and compassion. Want to come chat or become a chatter? Produced by: Bay Package Productions for the Oakland Museum of California 06 Nov 2026 In 1942, Dorothea Lange captured hundreds of images of the tragic and disgraceful incarceration of Japanese Americans. In response, many of her photographs were censored and remained unseen for decades. Masaki Fujihata dug through those images to find hidden stories that were just below the surface for his exhibition ā€œBeHere / 1942: A New Lens on the Japanese American Incarcerationā€, on view at OMCA. In this photograph Mrs. Nakamoto is pictured with her family smiling. Fujihata found the smile peculiar considering the hardship their family was preparing to face so he read through Lange’s field notes. The notes revealed that Mrs. Nakamoto asked Lange to send these photos to her husband who had already been arrested without evidence and taken to North Dakota. These hidden stories are why Fujihata decided to bring visitors inside the moments of 1942—before Japanese Americans in Oakland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles were forcibly incarcerated during World War II. Come explore and reimagine these histories through immersive installations, historic photographs, and augmented reality (AR) at OMCA! šŸŽŸļø Tickets at the link in bio! #JapaneseAmericanHistory #BeHere #AugmentedReality #MuseumExhibition #OaklandMuseumofCalifornia 04 Nov 2026 History, resistance, and collective liberation at OMCA on November 15. āœŠšŸ½šŸ„ Join us for Spotlight Sundays: Japanese American Legacies of Resistance, a community gathering inspired by our special exhibition, ā€œBeHere / 1942: A New Lens on the Japanese American Incarceration,ā€ on view through Dec 27. Hear from @satsukiina and Miya Sommers, who bring personal and familial connections to wartime incarceration, in a conversation hosted by @little_kotos_words. She rests on an undulating surface of rich purple, green, and blue jewel tones, which #RichardDiebenkorn selectively draws upon to highlight the curve of her calf, shoulder and coif. A single golden oval glows near the center right edge. Almost forty years ago, this canvas traveled to Tokyo in a solo exhibition held at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art. Organized with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, paintings and drawings from @SFMOMA and the @OaklandMuseumCA were on view from October 14 to December 3, 1989. While #Diebenkorn had visited Japan twice earlier in the decade, he was not able to make a trip to see this exhibition himself. This painting is currently on view at the @OaklandMuseumCA in the Gallery of California Art. The museum is open to the public Wednesdays to Sundays from 11am–5pm. #CuratorsChoice by Mary Clare McKinley, Head of Curatorial Affairs at the Richard Diebenkorn Foundation — Seated Nude, Arm on Knee, 1962, oil on canvas, 51 1/4 x 45 3/4 in.
