Today marks 2 months of River having come home with us from the NICU and what a different world we’re living in! He is thriving and receiving all kinds of wonderful at home care from Vanderbilt to ensure his continued healthy development.
Our sincerest thanks to all who encouraged, wrote letters, commented, and gifted meals over the past few months. We are incredibly grateful, and if anyone happens to need any napping tips I’m happy to offer the expertise of our resident napper in chief and his cohort of cats.

I’m generally reticent to post much in the way of deeply personal things about myself on social media. It’s easy to feel like this isn’t the place for hard things or vulnerability, but after the last month I am feeling compelled to rethink that perspective.
My son, River Samuel Bare, was born on January 14 through an emergency C-Section. There were major complications that caused critically low oxygen levels in the hours leading to birth as well as an infection in his blood. I walked with him to the NICU as snow began to fall in Nashville, the first night of a week or more of snowy views and impassably iced over roads. River was born fighting for his life with his eyes swollen shut, and shortly after his mom laid eyes on him for the first time in the NICU bed he was rushed to a different hospital for special treatment to mitigate potential neurological damages. The next time we saw him and for multiple weeks after he was unable to even cry for us because of the ventilator tube down his throat.
River has lived in three hospitals during his four weeks of life, and not yet set foot in the nursery we built for him. But he knows us, and knows that we are Home for him. At this moment he sleeps with his head on my chest. Thanks to miraculous medical care at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital and the countless prayers of family and friends he was stabilized and now is taking his final healing steps toward coming home.
The last few weeks have been without question the most difficult of my life. There were nights I felt a darkness and heaviness I never imagined, but as I hold him now I feel a profound thankfulness and excitement for the gift we’ve been given. Many thanks to all of you who have been supporting us from near and far. Kelly, River, and I are deeply grateful.

Thankful today! @jtrudawg joined me yesterday and helped put together a couple chains to try on for size before any major outboard purchases. Enjoying this one a lot: Neve 1073 > LA2A > 1176 > Struder A800.

So most of us took up some kind of hobby or outlet over the last few years. For me, thanks to the generous gift of an old & unused machine from a friend, was to wander into the endless weeds of home made espresso. Kellyeliz19 could tell you many stories of the joy (occasionally too much) I’ve taken learning more and more about this beautiful, infuriating, delicious hobby. It seems a little cliche but I love the hospitality, the intentionality, and the community that comes from the coffee industry and coffee culture when it is at its best. If I have the opportunity to play music out of town or really to travel anywhere, my first stop is always a new cafe each morning to enjoy that comfort & hospitality that makes you feel like you’re still home, just somewhere new.
Then one day I said to Kelly that I wanted to take a step toward starting a business, a small project to enjoy tinkering with. She responded quite simply: “why not coffee? You love coffee.” So we did...and that small step has, shall we say, escalated quickly.
@sweetcarolinascoffee is something we’ve been working on for a few months and that we’re incredibly excited to start booking later this summer. If you happen to live in Nashville and are interested in seeing us around town to grab a coffee and say hello, or have friends that might enjoy coffee service at an event, your support would mean the world! If you live elsewhere, feel free to check out the page to see photos of Kelly and myself building a big ‘ol box to sling drinks from. We can’t wait to wheel it out and start bringing our living room hospitality to wherever you are!

It’s been a minute since I’ve posted anything at all here, but since it’s a hard time for community, creativity, and collaboration (the three c’s I didn’t plan on alliterating) @jtrudawg and myself along with some other amazingly talented musical folks wanted to start up some #CoronaCollabs. Just because we can’t be in the same space doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy playing some music together! I believe @ericjmontgomerymusic is next up on this one to give it some color. #passiton #bass #drums
