Horticulture staff are busy planting bulbs in the Lyndale Park Annual-Perennial Garden, helping set the stage for a beautiful spring display. Our expert staff say the best time to plant bulbs is when temperatures start to cool in late September until the ground freezes. Soil temperatures need to drop and hold for multiple weeks so short fall heat waves won’t risk them breaking dormancy too early. October is a great time to plant, but even November planting can be successful before the ground freezes! The new planting surrounding the Freedom Form II sculpture at Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Park, Jr. continues to fill out while we enjoy the fall show. As our volunteer gardening season comes to a close, we want to thank everyone who has shown up in a park garden this year. The public gardens and landscapes found throughout the Minneapolis Park system couldn't all exist without you. We so appreciate that our community loves gardens as much as we do and they love them so much that they are willing to donate their most precious resource, their time and energy. Our Peace Gardener, Jacob titled this photo he shared “crouching gardener, hidden allium”. This super late blooming allium is often referred to as a Japanese ornamental onion or Allium thungbergii ‘Ozawa”. Last week we said good bye to the display fountains at Lyndale Park for the season. Staff winterized them which includes installing covers to keep them protected when not in use.
