On the day I was born, Alan Jones won the 1980 Argentine Grand Prix behind the wheel of a @williamsf1team FW07 in Buenos Aires. Because of that, I always wanted to meet the Australian legend, a driver who, in my opinion, has been vastly underrated. I had to wait until the 2015 Spanish Grand Prix for that meeting. Jones was there in Barcelona as a race steward, and he was incredibly kind. “Do you know what happened on January 13, 1980?” I asked. “I haven’t the faintest idea,” Jones replied, his eyes widening. “But now you’ve got me curious. Tell me, what happened?” “You won the Argentine Grand Prix in Buenos Aires that day!” I replied. “Really? That was so long ago that I thought there wasn’t a living soul who still remembered it. See, even I couldn’t remember! But now tell me, how on earth do you remember something like that?” he asked, with a huge smile on his face. “I was born that day, and that’s why I’ve always wanted to meet you!” I replied, visibly touching him. Those were truly special moments, and they meant a great deal to me. We met only a few more times over the years, but that little story always came up. This photo was taken shortly after that memorable first conversation. It means even more to me now, as the Australian legend is now also roaming the paddock in the sky.
