$100 FOR A RECORD. LET’S TALK ABOUT IT. I understand how that sounds. Especially when we’ve spent the last decade being conditioned to believe music should cost next to nothing. But here’s some perspective. We’ve sold just 40% of these records, and this release has already been more beneficial to me as an independent artist than anything I’ve released before. Not because we went viral. Not because an algorithm picked us. Because people decided the work was worth supporting directly. 100 copies. That’s it. Each one individually numbered, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. A full collaborative album with Steven King, powered by UPLFTRS. This isn’t a $100 donation disguised as a record. It’s a physical piece of art. Something you can own, play, preserve, and eventually pass down. And your purchase goes directly toward the people responsible for creating it. We’ve normalized paying for access to everything while owning almost nothing. Music included. The direct to consumer model changes that relationship. Less distance between the artist and the people who believe in the art. More ownership. More resources to create the next thing without asking. And the dope part? Hoop is back, baby!!! Black boys’ literacy rates are even lower than the already super low (and declining) national childhood literacy rates. Literacy experts agree part of this is seeing themselves centered and reflected in the material. Most of my books feature black kids because, proudly, that’s what I was (and in many ways am).
