Today marks the 9-year anniversary of Big Talk! 😊🎉 It all began with this YouTube video I made one summer, where I walked up to complete strangers and invited them to answer the question, “What do you want to do before you die?” (Big Talk…Before I Die on YouTube). Through this video, I hoped to show that no one needs to feel lonely. Instead, you can approach someone and start a conversation with a question that “skips the small talk” to nurture a deeper human connection. Just one question has the power to transform your life - it certainly transformed mine! Big Talk went on to become a sort of grassroots global movement after I was invited to give a TEDx talk that generated over 6.5 million views on YouTube. Soon people all over the world were sharing their stories about how asking Big Talk questions helped them to repair and deepen their relationships, overcome mental health struggles, find purpose at work, or even fall in love. I have since led Big Talk workshops for thousands of people all over the world. Just this morning, 125 Fulbrighters from over 65 different countries (Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Pakistan, Mexico - to name a few) participated in Big Talk. Two months ago, I traveled to New Hampshire to film Big Talk conversations for their statewide mental health campaign. A few days ago, a rising pop star used the Big Talk question card game at a dinner with his closest fans in Los Angeles. A U.S. senator has used Big Talk with his staff, as well as teachers at Harvard Medical School, and employees of Fortune 500 companies. Big Talk has truly been a passport to getting to know people from all walks of life from all over the world. Thank you to everyone who has supported and believed in Big Talk throughout these years. Walt, 83, lost his home in the Altadena (Eaton) fire yesterday. For decades he has been helping kids, seniors, and people experiencing homelessness in his own community. 🏆 Direct Relief is a four-time winner at the 2026 Anthem Awards! @anthemawards A collaborative video project with GoFundMe @gofundme, Kalina Silverman @kalinasilverman of @makebigtalk, and Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Hawaiʻi @hmhbhawaii received three Silver Awards and one Bronze Award across four categories: Creator Collaboration, Short-Form Video, Disaster Relief & Emergency Response, and Branded Content or Collaboration. Created in the wake of the devastating floods in Hawaiʻi, the video features Aunty Blanche of Hui Mahiʻai ʻĀina @huimahiaiaina, who leads a community in Waimānalo supporting more than 100 formerly unhoused Hawaiians. Her story highlights the resilience of communities recovering from disaster and the importance of continued support long after the headlines fade. While visiting China, I was inspired watching older people in the park every morning - not just working out - but moving their bodies through communal cultural activities like dancing, martial arts, and playing instruments. I met Mr. Zhang, a retired English teacher who shows up at Jing’an park in Shanghai every morning at sunrise to play the bamboo flute. Yesterday I led a Big Talk icebreaker at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility as part of their Mental Health Day, co-organized by the men inside including @free_freddie_hernandez @justice4stone , @mcbroderick, @lisa_erspamer and @theofficialbrettmaypage of the Life without Parole Foundation. I passed out Big Talk Question Cards and invited everyone to get into groups and skip the small talk. One man answered, “What do you do when nobody is watching?” with: “You know how when you peel an onion you cry? Well I like to go into my prison cell and peel back the layers of me and have a good cry.” Another answered, “What are the little things that bring you joy?” with: “When I walk outside to face the west and watch the sunset each day.” After the exercise, two men approached me in tears and told me the Big Talk cards were the best gift they’d ever been given. One of them will be free in 30 days and told me he plans to use the cards with his family. I then asked the men to write down their own Big Talk questions—the questions they wish they could ask or be asked. I’ve shared some of them in this video. After 12 years of working on Big Talk, this was one of the most impactful and powerful experiences I’ve ever had. Thank you to the men for your openness, vulnerability, and perspective.
