Two of our TIME100 Next covers this year happen to be comedians, and I got to sit down with both of them for some chuckles and some serious reflection on what it takes to be professionally funny.
@ash.padilla —the internet’s favorite new SNL star—swears she’s boring, but I think that was my favorite thing about her: she found the thing she’s good at and she spends all her time and energy working to be even better. If you haven’t seen her sketches “Kathy” or “Passing Notes,” I highly recommend.
@druski is one of those people who became famous by the sheer force of his own will. He started by posting skits on social media and he still does that, but the fact that he calls them “skits” is funny in itself, given the production value (high-speed police chases... intense sets... the same makeup artist who did Weapons). Now he’s going after his big Hollywood dreams.
I was both surprised and not surprised to discover that these two have a lot in common, as different as their work and humor ultimately is. They definitely made me laugh, and like Diane Keaton used to tell Padilla: Funny is money!

I was lucky enough to spend some time in Gloria Steinem’s orbit over the last few years. Walking up the stairs to her Upper East Side living room—a space where movements formed, where icons and leaders have gathered for decades—should have been intimidating.
But every time, Gloria would just be sitting there, smiling in her big red arm chair, talking to everyone who passed through her space like a potential friend, a comrade in the fight for social justice, and an equal. She literally let people hang in her bedroom, which, by the way, was the moodiest, coolest room I’ve ever seen, with ceiling-high bookshelves and casual photos she snapped with celebrities, world leaders, and friends.
She set a tone I don’t think I’ve experienced anywhere else, one of true openness, good humor, and an earnest drive to create change.
Thank you, Gloria, for dedicating your life to making the world a better place for women, for sharing your insights with millions as a journalist, speaker, organizer, mentor, and friend, for setting the ultimate example of generosity, and for making us laugh through it all.
The world is a better place because you were here.

This is my second year leading the TIME100 Creators list, and all I can say is that watching TikTok videos for hours at a time is hard work, but someone’s gotta do it.
In all seriousness, the impact content creators are having on the world around us—how we spend our time, how we spend our money, how we think about ourselves—is extremely real. Take @alixearle who appears on our cover and spoke to @edockterman about her skincare brand, which made $1 million within 5 minutes of launching this spring.

At the @kelloggfoundation Every Child Thrives Festival, held at the incredible new Obama Center (!!), the conversation kept coming back to storytelling: how stories shape who we are and what we believe is possible, how being seen can save a life.
The most memorable story came from @wcruz73 — a true trailblazer who was the first out gay actor to play an out gay lead on prime time TV, on My So-Called Life.
Wilson was kicked out of the house by his father when he revealed his sexuality at 19.
In our conversation onstage, he revisited that moment and what it was like to be estranged as he couch surfed and then started filming the show.
A year later, there was an episode where his character Ricky Vasquez was kicked out by his dad, and as the credits rolled when it aired, Wilson’s phone rang.
It was his father, ready to talk.
He had been watching the show, and following Ricky’s story helped him better understand his son.
I’ll be thinking about that story, and the way it still brings tears to Wilson’s eyes (and anyone he shares it with), for a long time.

On the rhode! I snuck out west last month to meet @haileybieber @ratty and @laurenratner — the founder and co-founders of @rhode — to learn how they built a billion-dollar beauty brand. After a shoot at @obb , Hailey and I sat down at Rhode hq in Beverly Hills to talk about all things skin care, what’s next for the brand (breaking news about an upcoming Sephora EU debut), and the double-edged swords of being both insanely famous and famously beautiful.
