You’re from Poland?”) Meeting legendary cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema and having a brief conversation with him in Polish at Cine Gear Expo in Los Angeles was definitely one of my recent highlights. From Interstellar and Oppenheimer to the upcoming The Odyssey, his work has been a huge source of inspiration for filmmakers around the world. Meet the director of photography of TRUE VIOLENCE, Kuba Zagajewski! Kuba is a Los Angeles–based cinematographer whose work bridges commercial precision with narrative sensitivity. He began his career in the camera department, working as an assistant camera and operator across commercials and feature films, where he developed a strong technical foundation and a keen eye for visual storytelling. Zagajewski quickly rose the ranks as director of photography. His cinematography spans branded content, music videos, and narrative projects, with clients including Universal Music Poland and Mitsubishi Electric, as well as campaigns for public institutions such as Poland’s Ministry of Health. His narrative work includes short films like SHIFT, shot on 35mm, and SLEEPLESS NIGHTS, a visually driven proof of concept exploring memory and imagination. Zagajewski is an alumni of the American Film Institute Conservatory, where he further refined his storytelling voice and cinematic approach. Originally from Poland, Zagajewski frequently works between Los Angeles and Warsaw, with a growing presence across both the U.S. and European film industries. 08 May 2026

SHIFT | 50D 35mm “In my opinion this short story was perfect for film capture both because of the visual qualities and the intimacy it comes with on set. I was aiming for a grounded visceral feeling with a hint of magical child-like perspective - if successful - it comes as much from the texture and colour response of the medium as from the lensing or movement. It allowed us both the room to experiment with exposure, but also physical in-camera ramping that’s technically unachievable on digital.” - @kuba_zagajewski_dp This short is part of our ongoing series featuring the @americanfilminstitute Cinematography 2025 Visual Essays. Ad for an interactive fitness mirror company (now that’s a sentence 💁🏻‍♂️) where I got to use my entire yearly allowance for unmotivated camera movement 💨 In the end you’ll find a previs vs export, I think we got pretty close!! The video storyboard filmed in our garden with dir. @radeckyyy as the lead star 💥 I believe this level of specificity in prep also translates to narrative work, were you can test ideas, or create a frame line you can alter when confronted with set reality. Patio z hamakiem, lampkami i spokojem ducha Wejście za bramą, podjazd jeśli trzeba Projektor z ekranem, schody kulturalne Piękny Grochów, choć na Powiśle 10min Parking uliczny, zawsze wolny, kamerówka / dwa auta friendly Nawet osobna przestrzeń warsztatowo / twórcza się zwolni jeśli trzeba (dostęp z ogródka ❤️). Miejsce dla nas wyjątkowe, to też ludzi szukamy wspaniałych. Powstałe w pocie czoła z teściem i przyjacielem, nie brakuje więc osobliwości i przytulności. Pogadamy? 06 Jan 2024
