“Yeah, the movie (@orsomething.mp4) is really special. It was written before “Keep the Meter Running” or “Subway Takes.” Which is funny, because the movie is a bunch of takes, and part of it takes place on the subway.
I think it’s a powerful story about a single-serving friendship. That’s what I call it. I had an experience once where I was at Joseph Leonard in the West Village, having a really bad day—maybe a bad weekend even, or maybe a bad week. And so I went there alone, brought a copy of the newspaper with me. It was a Sunday. And this old lady ended up sitting next to me, and we hit it off, and we ended up going to the MOMA together, spending the whole day together. We went to the Tea Room. Eight hours, ten hours. And then I didn’t get her number, and we never saw each other again. That’s what I call a single-serving friendship, and they’re beautiful.”

@SCENESTYLED: @KAREEM RAHMA WORKS BETTER IN TRANSIT
Kareem Rahma had flown into Cairo as the guest of honour for the CairoScene and ElFasla Impact List, with three days in the city, a carry-on populated by oversized suits and pyjama sets, and a schedule increasingly difficult to reconcile with the number of hours in a day. SceneStyled, meanwhile, had been putting together an ambitious cover story and collaborated with Berlin-based photographer and creative director @bassam_allam to help realise it. Somewhere between holding court on a Zamalek rooftop, entertaining a steady procession of pitches and attempting to recruit Mohamed Diab for a Cairo-set film, Kareem was also due to spend eight hours in front of our cameras.
My acquaintance with Kareem, however, began two years earlier, through an unlabelled audio recording of a Cairo cab ride. It involved a driver named Faisal, a generous helping of kebda, and an Egyptian-American host whose Arabic was still very much in formation. The recording would become an episode of Keep the Meter Running.
For the cover, we spent roughly eight hours moving through Zamalek, staging a visual narrative that placed Kareem’s particular brand of observational comedy within the city’s less predictable proceedings. Photographer Bassam Allam brought his surrealist visual language to the undertaking, while stylist Ahmed Sorour assembled a wardrobe of oversized tailoring, eccentric accessories and a Donald Duck tie that quickly acquired a following of its own.
The feature itself required a second encounter. We spoke about Subway Takes, the second season of Keep the Meter Running, his unlikely political excursions, and the peculiar business of finding success in an industry increasingly preoccupied with youth.
