Enter Goldfish Street, a chaotic neighbourhood where Cantonese street culture meets a futuristic digital world. 🐟 In Goldfish Mayhem, three girls venture into the cloud to save their foster mother, only to discover a much bigger secret behind the city's technological ambitions. Drawing on the streets of her childhood in Foshan, director @junielaux blends kung fu, absurdist humour and Cantonese cyberpunk in a story about family, memory and what gets lost in the name of progress. “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” So happy to have given a keynote at ZCOOL Design Week, China’s largest conference for creatives and designers, sharing my journey in AI filmmaking and how I imagine the future. I spoke about my collaborations with @openai , @google and ByteDance, inspired by my identity as an Asian woman and my reflections on family and love. I also shared GOLDFISH MAYHEM, created with @wearewonderstudios —a world built from my childhood in Foshan, southern China, and shaped by Cantonese culture, kung fu and Hong Kong comedy. As AI helps us create increasingly spectacular images, I care even more about authorship: the memories, emotions and questions we bring to our work. For me, that includes my Chinese roots and my perspective as a female filmmaker. Looking ahead, I hope to become a World Architect, creating evolving worlds that humans and AI agents can shape together. I want to bring daydreams into reality, so we can explore each other’s imaginations and find our way back to childhood. I’d also love to explore the potential of these experiences for emotional healing and new forms of interactive media. This is how we made the kung fu scenes in GOLDFISH MAYHEM. 🥋💥 It starts with real martial artists. We worked with martial arts choreographer Mr Zhang and his team to design and perform fight choreography rooted in Nanquan—Southern Chinese kung fu. We filmed their movements, then used depth maps and the live-action footage as video references in Seedance 2.5 to bring that choreography to life through our leading star, BOBO. 🦾🔥 Real kung fu. Human craft. GOLDFISH MAYHEM is a cyber-folk action-comedy set amid chaotic streets inspired by director Junie Lau’s childhood neighbourhood. The story follows three quirky, mischievous and recklessly fearless girls—BOBO, FENG SHUI GIRL and LITTLE ONE—who venture into a cloud-based digital world to save their foster mother from being sacrificed. There, they uncover a secret experiment in data immortality orchestrated by the city’s elite. ☁️ Blending street mythology, absurdist humour and ethical allegory with a highly stylised Lingnan aesthetic from southern China, the film creates a world that is surreal, vibrant and unmistakably rooted in its local culture. Proudly Introducing: Goldfish Street’s “Monkey King” — BOBO🦁 Her trade is humble; her opinion of herself is not. A fishball seller and heir to a kung fu school, BOBO has formidable fighting skills and an equally formidable sense of her own importance. Her robotic arm was built to make fishballs; her curry fishball cannon ensures that anyone threatening the neighbours receives a hot meal at considerable speed. She runs a food cart with the authority of a grandmaster and walks through the street as though expecting a standing ovation. Raised by the neighbourhood, she considers everyone’s troubles her personal responsibility. Her heart is in the right place; her fists tend to get there first. She insists she has given up on her dreams, although the hope of reopening her old kung fu school has proved rather difficult to abandon. Proudly Introducing: Goldfish Street’s “Nobel-Worthy” Inventor — LITTLE ONE 🐦‍⬛ Incense for the dead; bright ideas for the living. A deadpan genius, Little One runs a shop selling paper phones, computers and other offerings to be burnt as gifts for the afterlife. Others burn paper money for their ancestors; she burns Bitcoin access codes—apparently, being dead is no excuse for falling behind on technology. She rarely speaks, and when she does, her remarks tend to require decoding. The neighbours mistake her late-night coding sessions for attempts to summon spirits—an understandable error, given the incense and eerie blue light. Her ambitions are modest: uncover the secrets of the mysterious world known as the Cloud, and see her family once more. Delighted to be profiled in Forbes @forbes When the door I had expected to open never did, I turned to a new medium and built a path of my own. This piece gave me the chance to look back on the journey—from discovering martial arts at eight in Foshan, through boarding school and a master’s degree at University of the Arts London @unioftheartslondon @lcflondon_ , to working as a production designer in commercials, directing the official music video for Peter Gabriel @itspetergabriel ’s “The Court,” collaborating with OpenAI @openai , Google @google , and ByteDance, and now creating Goldfish Mayhem with Wonder Studios @wearewonderstudios It is a story about love, about finding my voice as a woman and filmmaker, and about how the little girl I once was kept making her way into a much bigger world. So happy to be invited by Clarins @clarinsofficial. My studio and I created a new art film, **The Dual State**, using artificial intelligence for the launch of the **new Clarins Double Serum Eye**. ✨ The story came from something very close to us: late nights, endless edits, glowing screens, and those moments when “just one more change” suddenly turns into 3AM. In the film, Eden discovers another world beneath reality — a living system of cells, fibers, plants, and flowing golden networks. A world that has been quietly recording every sleepless night, every bit of stress, and every moment of exhaustion. For me, **The Dual State** is about two forces working together: nourishing and restoring, while also activating and reconnecting. Maybe life doesn’t always have to be a choice between pushing forward and taking care of ourselves. Sometimes, **1 + 1 can be greater than 2. ✨** #aifilmmaking 01 Sep 2026
