The Global Institute for Women’s Leadership (GIWL) held a really special event in Adelaide recently, which I had the great pleasure of facilitating and is available to listen to now on A Podcast of One’s Own. I was joined by a stellar panel: GIWL ANU Director Professor Michelle Ryan, Teach Us Consent CEO Chanel Contos, and Man Cave CEO Ben Vasiliou. We delved into how misogyny affects and constrains both men and women who feel forced to conform to particular gender stereotypes. As a result, tackling misogyny will benefit everyone. It’s vital that we join forces on research, advocacy and outreach in this space so we can effectively address women’s safety, healthy masculinities and gender equality. Thank you to our fantastic speakers and to everyone who came along to the event. You can listen to the episode via the link in bio or wherever you get your podcasts. 04 Nov 2026 It was fantastic to be joined by the Hon. Chris Bowen MP, Federal Minister for Energy and Climate Change, for this year’s Julia Gillard Public Lecture at Adelaide University. As Australia prepares for COP31 in Turkiye next month, Minister Bowen gave the audience great insight into the nation’s role as President of Negotiations, and what actually happens at a COP event. We also discussed the importance of elevating the voices of Pacific Island nations, which are at the forefront of climate change. We know that our changing climate impacts lives in a myriad of ways, and we all need to play a role in addressing it. Thank you to the fantastic team at Adelaide University for another excellent event. 27 Oct 2026 A new episode of A Podcast of One’s Own is out today. For this special interview episode of Julia’s Book Club, I’m delighted to welcome award-winning writer, political scientist and activist Elif Shafak back to the podcast. When Elif joined me two years ago to discuss There Are Rivers in the Sky, we spoke about her childhood in Turkey, what led her to writing and the risks she has taken to tell the stories of people too often silenced. Now Elif is back with her epic new novel, In One Brief Moment All Eternity, and I had the great pleasure of being the first person to interview her about it. The book tells the story of 19th century author Gustave Flaubert, but this is not historical fiction as we usually know it. The story unfolds through a remarkable chorus of voices: the women who shaped or crossed his life, including his mother, the servant who raised him, and his most famous creation, Madame Bovary. Other voices belong to Istanbul, to ghosts, and even to Flaubert’s illness and opium. Elif and I explore what drew her to Flaubert, her inspiration for the novel’s unusual structure, and the stories history leaves unheard. We also discuss the often complicated relationship between writers and their characters, and the striking parallels between Flaubert’s prosecution and Elif’s own experience. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. You can listen wherever you get your podcasts. 21 Oct 2026 (no caption) 19 Oct 2026 Wellcome Chair Julia Gillard reflects on the two main things that will stay with her: - Witnessing the impacts that rising sea levels are already having on low lying island communities - The huge determination of Pacific island leaders and communities for global action on climate change COP31 takes place next month in Turkïye, where we will be continuing to advocate for action to protect human health from the effects of climate change. 15 Oct 2026 If trust breaks down, so does our ability to face what comes next. Drawing on the views of more than 140,000 people across 140 countries, the Wellcome Global Monitor 2026 helps us understand where trust is under pressure, challenge our assumptions and identify where action is needed globally and locally. Understanding trust is only a starting point. The wider challenge is ensuring that people can see and experience the benefits of science in their lives. Explore the report at the link in our bio. 12 Oct 2026 121 new schools. Best NAPLAN results. Best paid teachers. Julia Gillard. Four of my favourite Victorian Labor achievements. 08 Oct 2026 Pre-COP31 begins in Fiji next week and it’s hard to imagine a more fitting place to have this conversation. Pacific Island nations have long been the moral voice of the climate movement. They are also among the communities living most directly with the impacts of climate change, from rising sea levels to growing health risks. As Christiana Figueres @cfigueres - Former Executive Secretary of UNFCCC @unclimateechange put it: climate action is not only about technology or targets. It’s about our responsibility to one another and the kind of future we choose to create. Wellcome are bringing health into these conversations through discussions on extreme heat, pregnancy and climate-resilient health systems. The challenge now is to move from recognition to implementation. That means listening to Pacific voices, investing in solutions, and ensuring health is at the centre of climate action. 01 Oct 2026 In this episode, @juliagillard is joined by leading Pacific feminist and peacebuilder Sharon Bhagwan-Rolls. For more than three decades, Sharon has worked to ensure women’s voices shape the decisions affecting their lives, from local communities across the Pacific to the United Nations Security Council. In this powerful conversation, Sharon reflects on the experiences that shaped her activism and discusses women’s vital role in peacebuilding, why climate change is a human-rights issue, and what global decision-makers can learn from Pacific women. She and Julia also look ahead to COP31 and explore what meaningful Pacific leadership in the global climate movement should look like. Listen via the link in our bio, or wherever you get your podcasts! 30 Sep 2026 A new Book Club episode is out today! This month Julia and @kathy.lette discuss the Booker Prize shortlisted novel May We Feed the King. It’s British poet Rebecca Perry’s debut fiction novel, and it tells the story of a curator, who dresses the rooms of historic buildings for tour groups and events. While working at a medieval castle, the curator becomes fascinated by a long forgotten King, who reluctantly sat on the throne centuries ago. Julia and Kathy discuss Perry’s beautiful prose and the clever way the story asks questions about those in power today and what makes a ‘good’ leader. They also reflect on what they look for in a work of fiction and some of the ways this book didn’t resonate with them. If you’ve read May We Feed the King we’d love to hear your thoughts. You can listen to the episode via the link in our bio or wherever you get your podcasts. 23 Sep 2026 This week on A Podcast of One’s Own, @juliagillard is joined by award-winning journalist and anti-violence campaigner @sherelemoodyfemicidewatch. For more than a decade, Sherele has tirelessly documented the lives of the Australian women and children killed through violence, ensuring they are remembered for who they were, not reduced to headlines or statistics. For Sherele, this work is deeply personal. As a young woman, she discovered that her stepfather had murdered two girls: five-year-old Sandra Dorothy Bacon and nine-year-old Stacey-Ann Tracy. Although she never met them, their stories profoundly shaped her life and led her to found the RED HEART Movement. In this deeply moving conversation, Sherele talks to Julia about her childhood, her path into journalism and activism, and her work supporting bereaved families and honouring the stories of women and children lost to violence. Content warning: This episode discusses childhood abuse, sexual violence, domestic and family violence, and the murder of women and children. Please take care while listening. If you’re affected by anything raised in this conversation, or concerned about someone you know, contact 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732, text 0458 737 732 or visit 1800respect.org.au. You can find links in our bio. Support is available 24/7. If anyone is in immediate danger, call Triple Zero.
