This Siberian flying squirrel @moscow_zoo_official has its large eyes to thank for its adorable looks. While those eyes certainly are captivating, its most impressive feature is the flap of skin that stretches between the front and rear legs. By spreading this flap, the flying squirrel is able to glide distances of over a hundred metres! #PhotoArk @natgeosociety

These moon jellies at Shark Reef Aquarium may not have brains or hearts, but they do have a super power - they are able to detect when marine ecosystems are out of balance. Jellyfish are able to thrive in environments that most other species would be unable to inhabit by reversing their development and turning back into young jellies until conditions turn favorable again. This means that when the health of the ocean declines, moon jelly populations remain stable and can actually increase, alerting scientists to issues like overfishing, ocean warming, ocean acidification, and pollution. #WorldJellyfishDay #PhotoArk @natgeosociety

With paws like a cat, a tail like a monkey, and round ears like a weasel, fossas like this one @theomahazoo can be hard to categorize at first glance. Although they share some similarities with cats, the fossa is most closely related to the mongoose and civet. #PhotoArk @natgeosociety

Happy Halloween from this western yellow bat! This critter is a species of vesper bat that is found in Mexico and the southwestern United States. When available, this bat will use the dead fronds that encircle palm trees as a roosting site. Photos taken @azbatrescue. #Halloween #PhotoArk @natgeosociety

Meet Buckwheat, a gray mouse lemur I photographed @dukelemurcenter. Natives of Madagascar, mouse lemurs are largely understudied because their small size and nocturnal nature makes them difficult to observe. That said, genetic studies have revealed there are 24 different mouse lemur species, all having evolved to suit Madagascar’s diverse habitats! #WorldLemurDay #PhotoArk @natgeosociety

Wondering how the Spanish shawl nudibranch got its stellar coloration? The magic happens when the nudibranch feeds on a species of hydroid, a small predator related to jellyfish. The hydroid possesses a pigment called astaxanthin, which when consumed by the nudibranch, presents itself in three different states, creating the purple, orange, and red colors you see in this picture. Malaysian dead leaf mantids live on the ground among dead leaves and bushes in damp, tropical forests. In addition to their brownish-gray coloring, they have a broad upper body that looks ripped and crumpled like a dying leaf. When threatened, they’ll spread their wings to display bright colors meant to ward off predators. Photo taken @theomahazoo. #PhotoArk @natgeosociety

When they’re born, leopard cat kittens weigh between 75 - 130 grams. At four weeks old, like the kitten you see here, they’ve nearly doubled in weight. At this age, the kitten’s permanent canine teeth appear and they begin to eat solid food! #PhotoArk @natgeosociety

Which Bat Are You?
Tap your screen to find out which bat you are! 🦇
Did you know? With over 1,500 species, bats make up roughly 20% of all classified mammals on Earth.
These bats were documented by #NatGeoExplorer @JoelSartore as part of the National Geographic Photo Ark. The #PhotoArk uses the power of photography to inspire people to delve into the captivating lives and remarkable behaviors of wildlife and explore solutions to safeguard them from growing threats.

Cuvier's dwarf caiman was first described by the French zoologist Georges Cuvier in the early 1800s. In their home range, they are considered a keystone species, meaning that their presence in the ecosystem helps to maintain a healthy balance of organisms. If they were to disappear, fish like piranhas could begin to overtake local waterways. Photo taken @gladysporterzoo. #PhotoArk @natgeosociety
