Am I a thrill seeker?
The question surfaced during a thirty-minute ride from the Atlantic back to the hotel, after another long night far from land. My fellow producer-shooter and I had just stepped off the pedestal of our floating chariot and into a production van, where a young production assistant drove our weak, weary bodies toward a shower, a meal, and a few hours of sleep. In that narrow space between the water and the hotel, we reflected on the lives we had chosen—or perhaps the lives that had chosen us.
We had been among the last two boats on the water, and neither had caught anything. On a fishing show, that meant more than empty pockets for the fishermen. It meant empty hours of television, too. When the fish do not bite, the morale on board sinks. Far from shore, with nothing to show for the day, you feel the weight of every missed opportunity. The fishermen call someone who loses more fish than he lands a “googan.” On this trip, we were all beginning to feel like one.
My companion was a fellow warrior of the water, a Southern gentleman I had not known long but had come to respect. He was humble and honest in his telling, unwilling to sugarcoat the layers of what we had experienced. Our conversation in the van became a kind of therapy. We had been in the thick of it together: exhausted, under pressure, and searching for a story where the ocean had given us very little.
That was the real test of the job—not simply enduring the hours, but creating something compelling from almost nothing while making sure you did not fall into the ocean. The work demanded constant attention. We were responsible for four nearly round-the-clock fishing cameras, two inside and two outside, along with a 788 mixer, a full bridge sound system that required us to record clean audio and troubleshoot disasters with minimal hesitation.
Then there were the specialty cameras: one mounted on a painter’s pole and positioned over the water, a pair of gooseneck GoPros secured wherever the boat allowed, an A7 for stills and slow motion, a small gimbal for more controlled movement, and a drone to capture even the mundane from above. It is not often that I am fortunate to work on a project that has positive impact on people’s lives, not just in entertainment and educational value, but in real change. I was a part of a team that worked for two years to capture the work of the DNA Doe Project to help bring closure to the families of missing people.
