A coach. A young boy. A recording of the Seoul 1988 Olympics. ✨
That’s where it began for Abhijit Bhattacharya - and this week in Birmingham, the journey came full circle as the former India captain received the IOC Gender Equality Champions Award from IOC President Kirsty Coventry. 🏆
His Brahmaputra Volleyball League now reaches 12,000+ children across 400 villages in Assam, built on one simple rule: girls and boys play as equals. Same courts. Same chances. 🏐
👏 Congratulations, Abhijit!

🌍 BETTER WORLD THROUGH SPORT presented by IOC Young Leaders 👉 Dakar 2026
6 months before the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026, we are highlighting the work of the IOC Young Leaders programme to contribute to the successful delivery of the first ever Olympic event in Africa taking place this coming October/November.
Eight IOC Young Leaders: Audrey Oronda 🇰🇪, Chloé Abou Chabake 🇱🇧🇫🇷, Jordan Joel 🇳🇬, Rafael Valdivieso 🇩🇴, Sara Moamen 🇪🇬, Shereif Kholeif 🇬🇧🇪🇬, Nadine Taderera 🇿🇼 and Jacqueline Simoneau 🇨🇦, will be on the ground in Dakar to deliver the “Better World Through Sport presented by IOC Young Leaders” booth activation at Dakar 2026.
Based at the Athlete365 House in the Youth Olympic Village, the IOC Young Leaders will engage with athletes through interactive experiences and hopefully demonstrate how sport and Olympic value transform lives and benefit people “everywhere, every day” by strengthening social connections and fostering safer, more equitable and sustainable communities, while positioning and promoting the IOC Young Leaders Programme as an IOC flagship initiative aligned with Olympism365 strategy.
