Zwei Kulturen, zwei Sprachen - für mich war das nie ein Widerspruch, sondern immer eine Bereicherung. 🇩🇪🇹🇷 Ende des Monats jährt sich das deutsch-türkische Anwerbeabkommen zum 65. Mal. 65 Jahre gemeinsame Geschichte, die auch meine ganz persönliche Geschichte geprägt haben. 1973 kam mein Großvater İsmail aus der Türkei ins Ruhrgebiet, um als Bergmann unter Tage zu arbeiten. Viel hatte er damals nicht dabei - außer den festen Willen, seiner Familie eine bessere Zukunft zu ermöglichen. Seine Geschichte steht für mich bis heute für Mut, harte Arbeit und Hoffnung. Am 30. Oktober 1961 wurde das Abkommen unterzeichnet. Ein politisches Dokument, das am Ende das Leben von Millionen Menschen verändert hat. Auch das meiner Familie. Man muss sich nicht für eine Seite entscheiden, um irgendwo anzukommen. Es ist schwer, Worte zu finden, die der Bedeutung dieser Auszeichnung gerecht werden. Die Mevlüde-Genç-Medaille ist für mich kein gewöhnlicher Preis. Sie ist eine große Ehre - aber vor allem eine Verpflichtung. Mevlüde Genç hat nach dem unvorstellbaren Leid des Anschlags von Solingen mit etwas geantwortet, das weit über das hinausgeht, was man erwarten konnte: mit Liebe, Menschlichkeit und Versöhnung. Ihre Haltung erinnert uns daran, dass Hass niemals die Antwort sein kann. Für mich ist diese Auszeichnung auch persönlich besonders bedeutend. Meine Geschichte hat in Gelsenkirchen und Nordrhein-Westfalen begonnen. Hier habe ich erlebt, dass Menschen unterschiedlichster Herkunft ganz selbstverständlich Seite an Seite leben und arbeiten können. Ich möchte diese Werte auch weitergeben: an die nächste Generation und an die vielen jungen Menschen, die ihren eigenen Weg gehen. Bildung, Empathie und die Bereitschaft, andere Perspektiven zu verstehen, sind dabei entscheidend. Vielen Dank an das Land Nordrhein-Westfalen und Ministerpräsident @hendrik.wuest für diese besondere Ehrung. Ich nehme sie mit großer Dankbarkeit entgegen - und mit dem Bewusstsein, dass sie eine Verantwortung mit sich bringt. Der Großvater unter Tage im Ruhrgebiet. Der Enkel mit der Kapitänsbinde der Nationalmannschaft. ⚽️ Diesem Enkel, İlkay Gündoğan, habe ich am Abend in Istanbul die Mevlüde-Genç-Medaille des Landes #NRW überreicht. Ausgezeichnet wurde er bereits im vergangenen Jahr. Die persönliche Übergabe haben wir jetzt am Bosporus nachgeholt. Er ist ein Vorbild weit über den Sport hinaus. Aus den Gastarbeiterinnen und Gastarbeitern von damals sind Nordrhein-Westfälinnen und Nordrhein-Westfalen geworden. Ihre Kinder und Enkel sind selbstverständlicher Teil unseres Landes. İlkay Gündoğan macht sichtbar, was aus dieser gemeinsamen Geschichte gewachsen ist. Die Verleihung erinnert an die Nacht des 29. Mai 1993, in der vier Jugendliche Brandsätze in das Haus der Familie Genç warfen. Mevlüde und Durmuş Genç verloren zwei Töchter, zwei Enkelkinder und eine Nichte, 17 Familienmitglieder wurden zum Teil sehr schwer verletzt und leiden noch immer an den Folgen. İlkay Gündoğan verkörpert jene Werte, für die Mevlüde Genç trotz dieser schrecklichen Tat Zeit ihres Lebens eingetreten ist: Versöhnung, Toleranz und die Überzeugung, dass das Verbindende stärker sein muss als das Trennende. Pep - what can I say? Where do I start? ✍️🩵 It’s difficult to truly describe the impact Pep has had - not only on Manchester City as a football club, but on everything around it as well. The trophies and achievements speak for themselves. But what made him special was always much bigger than winning. For me personally, he was never just a manager. He was a mentor, a leader and also a friend. From the very first day we worked together, he challenged me to see football differently. Every detail mattered. Every meter on the pitch had a purpose. There were moments when his intensity pushed all of us to our limits mentally and physically - but looking back, that obsession with perfection is exactly what made his teams so extraordinary. What many people don’t see from the outside is the human side of Pep. Beyond football, he is incredibly humble, thoughtful and someone who genuinely cares about the people around him. Over the years, I was lucky enough to experience that side of him very closely. He made me a better player, but also a better person. When I look back on my career one day, my time working with Pep will always be one of the defining chapters of my journey. ManCity without Pep will never be the same again.
