💌 In my book, I wrote: “Everyone sees the summit. Nobody sees the steps.” The steps are the hours spent alone with your craft. Repeating something you’ve already done a thousand times, trying to make it a little better. Learning to stay when the excitement wears off. Loving something enough to keep learning, even when nobody is watching. You have to believe before other people do. And sometimes, you have to keep believing for years. If you’re living through those years right now, I hope you give yourself time. You can be growing without getting attention. You can be getting better without getting applause. The quiet years count too. Find something you would still care about if nobody paid you. Something you want to understand deeply. Give it your attention, your patience, your heart. Give yourself permission to be a beginner long enough to become someone you’re proud of. 9,000 people dancing under the open sky in Los Angeles for MAKE THE GIRLS DANCE. Our event. Our production. Another 11,000 on the waiting list. I wish I could show this night to the kid I used to be. Hold him and say: “All those hours when you thought you weren’t getting anywhere? 📩When you grow up with very little, you think money will change everything. So you chase it. The success. The things you never had. Convinced that one day, you’ll arrive, and life will finally begin. Then you get there, and you realize how much of life was happening along the way. The nights making music when nobody knew your name. The people who believed in you before there was a reason to. The joy of doing something you love, without knowing where it might take you. 21 years ago, I was listening to “The Next Episode” by Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre. It made me want to make music. I had no idea how far I could go. I just knew how it made me feel. That’s why my album is called 21. Twenty-one years of following that feeling. Today, a song with Snoop Dogg has my name on it too. I wish I could go back and sit beside my younger self, listening to “The Next Episode,” before any of this began. Play him our song. Watch his face when he realizes whose voice is on his record. And tell him to enjoy every step. Even the years when it feels like nothing is happening. If you’re reading this wondering whether to give up on your dream, please give yourself another chance. You might be one song away from changing your life. One idea. One more attempt at something you almost walked away from. I know how hard it is to keep believing in something you can’t see yet. But being unheard doesn’t mean you have nothing to say. And taking longer than you hoped doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Find what you love. Give yourself to it. And remember to live while you’re building your life. There are moments along the way that you’ll miss one day, too. Where you start doesn’t have to decide how far you go.
