It's tough being the little guy, even when you're a shark... 🦈⁠ ⁠ Recent guest @jennaleasmithers captured this extraordinary moment when a juvenile blacktip reef shark is hunted by a much larger blacktip reef shark and two groupers off Heron Island.⁠ ⁠ The larger shark struck first, briefly catching the juvenile before it managed to escape into the shallows. But the chase wasn't over...⁠ ⁠ Two groupers followed closely behind and, unfortunately for the little shark, one eventually caught it. 100 years ago, this island made turtle soup! 🥣 Today it’s a protected green zone on the Southern Great Barrier Reef, and from October to April, it’s Heron Island turtle season, as green and loggerhead turtles come ashore here to safely nest 🐢 Both species are threatened, which is why guests get strict guidelines on watching nesting turtles, and the island’s naturalist guides run free turtle walks at sunrise and sunset. Hatchlings start appearing in late December 🤩 Snorkelling to the “cleaning station” to see the turtles and rays park themselves up for their fishy friends to do their job was so cool! And we loved our fav little epaulette shark (aka the walking shark) which kept swimming up to us on our coral watch walk 🪸 sooo... you, me and @heronisland? 💫 follow @be_travelkind to find kind reef trips (we’re working on a map feature next!) 🤭 22 Oct 2026
