What's the one thing an artist has to bring that nobody else can bring for them?
I can hand you the song. I can coach you up. I can open every door I have. But there's one thing I can't give you.
The one thing you have to bring is wanting it more for yourself than anyone else, and being willing to work harder for it than anyone else. That's what motivates everyone in the room. That's what makes the manager, the producer, your songwriters, your label, your team want to fight for you.
We can't want it more for you than you want it, because it'll never succeed.
So the question isn't who's in your corner. It's how will you motivate other people to want it as bad as you, through your actions?
Art over ego.

Here's the tricky thing about ego. There's always one in the room, and it always needs to be fed. So let the song be the only ego in the room.
Feed the song, not the ego.

💯 Your ego can either build you up or hold you back, but it’s always going to be in the room. The key is remembering who you are and what you bring to the table. You don’t have to let a negative ego control you when you KNOW you deserve to be in that space!
🔥 DQ learned this firsthand as he walked into rooms filled with egos. Never forget your worth, own your greatness, and walk confidently in who you are!

What's one thing I tell aspiring songwriters and artists, whether they're going to Berklee, Belmont, Full Sail, or moving to LA, Atlanta, or Nashville?
Learn to record yourself.
You don't need to be a master mix engineer. But being able to record yourself opens up so many doors.
First, it makes your songs better. When you can hear your own work back, you hear what's actually there.
Second, it changes how you communicate with producers. When you understand the process, you understand what you want, and you can say it clearly.
Third, you can edit at home. If an A&R calls and wants the chorus changed, the verse changed, the pre changed, you don't have to wait until you can book a studio. You just do it, right then.
That skill alone will make you a better songwriter.
Pro tip: I know it can feel intimidating, recording yourself and hearing yourself back. But what if you look at recording yourself like it's your sandbox? Your time to discover your sound, without outside noise. Make it fun.
Do you record yourself? What DAW do you use? Tell me below.

It's important to have champions in your corner. It's important to have mentors. But don't forget to be a mentor yourself.
Still to this day, one of the best things I've ever worked on, hands down, is a show called Majors 𝄞 Minors. It's a show I worked on with Evan and his brother Tim, getting to mentor kids. What was the most magical part about it wasn't the songs but the friendships that they built through the process, because, yes, there was a challenge and a winner every week, but nobody got sent home as a consequence for not winning. That helped build community and friendships and trust, to where the stronger singers would help the weaker singers and the stronger dancers would help the weaker dancers, not because it was a competition but because they were creating friendships and collaboration, and letting the ego out of the room so the art just got better.
Being in that moment with the kids, along with getting to help write and produce and all of that, I ultimately realized I can do this every day: helping the next generation of artists or creatives find community and like-minded individuals that just want to grow. Because sometimes you feel like an outcast when you're so creative and maybe other people around you aren't.
Okay, that's enough about me. How about you? Who have you been a champion for, or a mentor for?

Throwback. This one's from the early stages.
Wednesday was Erika's spotlight. Today is Evan's.
Erika is my sister and Evan is my brother. Not by blood, by choice. What started as writing together once a week turned into twice a week, and then turned into wanting to start a whole writing team together.
In those early days, Evan and Erika championed for me to come on a writing trip with them down to Miami. I was an unsigned writer, and they got me into rooms with Enrique, RedOne, Jim Jonsin, and even the legendary Lionel Richie, working with some of the biggest artists in the game at the time. Can you believe it?
And they didn't have to fight for me. They just did.
But through all of it, the lesson that never left me is a simple one. If a melody can't carry a song by itself, no harmony will save it.
I came up as a harmony guy. Brandy and Take 6 raised me. If a part felt thin, my answer was always to stack more on top of it. More voices, more notes, more everything.
Evan taught me to trim the fat. Strip the song down to just the melody and make the melody stand on its own. Then every harmony, every part you add back, has to earn its place and mean something.
Simplicity. That lesson has followed me into every room since, and it's one of the first things I pass on to the artists I work with.
Who taught you that less could be more?

This week I'm honoring Evan Bogart and Erika Nuri-Taylor. Today is Erika's spotlight.
Erika is one of the most amazing humans I have ever met. She is genuinely happy when her friends win. No jealousy, no jaded, just a true champion and cheerleader for everyone else's success. That is rare in this industry. It taught me a lot.
Early on she gave me a line I still carry: whoever you meet on the way up, you'll see again on the way down.
What it means is simple. Treat everyone with kindness. You might be the big songwriter in the room and they're the new engineer. Treat them well, because five years from now they might be the VP of A&R at the label of an artist you want to write for. They will remember your actions in those studios. They will remember how you made them feel.
Erika lived this. She walked away from the music industry to live life to its fullest, and came back when that season was meant to be. And every time, people opened doors for her. Not because she asked. Because she's genuine. People genuinely like her, and people respect her. When people like you and respect you, you can leave and come back, and the opportunities are there. Then it's your choice to take them.
People remember how you made them feel, not exactly what you did.
Who gave you a chance before you had your first credit? Tell me below. Your answers shape what I share next.

This week I want to honor two people, together, because it doesn't feel right honoring one without the other: Evan "Kidd" Bogart and Erika Nuri-Taylor.
The Writing Camp was the first songwriting team I was ever part of. We were a writing team, then a publisher. We created TV shows together. The better part of seven or eight years as a tightly knit unit, and I learned so much from both of them.
They were both true champions for me. They helped me navigate my first publishing deal. They introduced me to other industry professionals. We wrote together every day, two, three songs a day, for years. But most importantly, we not only became business partners, we became family, and genuinely looked out for each other in life and business and everywhere else.
This is where we truly adopted the motto of hits before splits. That came from them educating me. Evan put it this way: 10% of a number one is better than 100% of a song no one ever heard of.
Who's to say whose line matters most to the listener? We can't control which lyric they grab hold of. The chorus line, a line in the verse, the overall story, there's no way to tell. At the end of the day the song is the listener's own individual experience. If we're counting lines to get a bigger cut, the song doesn't come out as good.
The Writing Camp really started when JR left town and Evan and I asked to use his studio at Chalice for a week to throw a writing camp. We invited established writers and producers he knew and up-and-coming ones I knew. The whole motto was hits before splits. If it's three people, it's three people. If it's ten people, it's ten people.
Hits before splits was the beginning of Art Over Ego. Before I had the words for it, I was already living it with them.
I'm truly grateful for both Evan and Erika, because when we met, both of them already had number one records, and they still chose to start a writing team with me, who had no credits, nothing but a dream and some talent. I can never express how thankful I am for them taking a chance on me and pulling me under their wing. I am forever grateful, and I love you both.
Who's a champion in your corner?

Art over ego is the phrase, but art can be anything. This is a story about Mike putting friendship over ego. And I was that friend.
You've seen the career, the family, the friends. But it started in a turbulent place. At 12, in the middle of my mom's mental health struggles, she disowned me, and I went to live with my father. I spent years spiraling and hiding it well.
But remember, your struggles don't define you. It's how you overcome them... and sometimes it takes one person to nudge you in the right direction.
At Shenandoah I found Mike and the Fab Five, and we built each other's confidence just by becoming true friends.
Junior year, Mike and I had an apartment lined up. Then a five-week program at Berklee on a whim changed everything. It felt like home, musically. But my abandonment trauma had me terrified to disappoint anyone, so I called Mike and offered to come back for a semester while he found a roommate.
He didn't guilt me. He didn't make it about him. He said: you need to go. That's where you need to be. Don't worry about me, I'll be fine.
That one selfless act put my entire career on a different trajectory.
How we overcome our struggles doesn't stop there. My mother, who once woke up believing the world would be better off without her, chose to get help instead. Today she's a beautiful grandmother and mom, and I'm beyond grateful that we're still in each other's lives.
I'm still overcoming, every day. But here's what I know: how you treat people in your hardest moments, ego aside, is everything.
Who put you above themselves when it cost them something?

Something @motivationalmike2 said on his podcast...
Your struggles don't define you. How you overcome them does.
So how do I use this to help my artists and their artistry? Like this.
The artist you were 6-12 months ago doesn't define the artist you are today. So what if you did pop or R&B the last 3 records? Go do a country, heavy metal, or even classical record.
And one step further. Your career doesn't define the person you are. Maybe music was just the path to something greater you never expected. A non-profit, a tech company, a clothing line. Whatever your heart desires.
At the core, it's the person that matters, and what you stand for.
Monday I honored my best friend. Today, the lesson his words unlocked.
What's one box you've outgrown? Tell me below. Your answers shape what I share next.
