Chicken plumping, where poultry is injected with water, salt and additives to make it look bigger and more appealing, is fairly standard industry practice. It is commonly done to frozen chicken, which producers say keeps the meat moist and improves flavour. But it also adds weight, and when that chicken is cooked, most of the water evaporates. In the UK, producers only need to declare that they’ve added water when it exceeds 5% of the product’s weight. In the US, some poultry products can contain up to 15% of added solution. So next time you buy chicken that looks unusually large and juicy, check the label to make sure you’re not paying for added water. For millennia, people have looked to the heavens for guidance and meaning: when to hunt and harvest, how to navigate the seas. But modern astrology now looks at the stars very differently. If in the past, the stars reflected a collective social order, today they are more often treated as a vast personal mirror. Katherine Rowland recently traveled to an astrology conference in Chicago to speak to attendees on what the stars are really trying to tell us, and what purpose they now serve in people’s lives. Our writers have been reminiscing on the hair disasters they’ve never quite got over, from bowl cuts to extreme mullets, punk dos to bad dye jobs. Guardian politics reporter Ariana Baio (@arianabaio ) explains Democrats' victories in Alabama, Florida and Texas. The Guardian’s chief music critic @alexis_petridis met the band ahead of their new release Carnaval de Luz, an album described as “defiantly joyful”. U2 have kept their band together for a half a century with a firm sense of democracy, where every member’s voice is heard. Although it has proved harder as time goes on due to the male ego, says Bono. Bono also discussed his activism and why, despite an invitation to the White House, he can’t work with the Trump administration: “I know I’m not up to that, I don’t have the ability to negotiate [with them], it’s too much.” To read the whole interview, and the album review, head to the link in bio. 07 Nov 2026 Elon Musk poured a staggering $446m into Republican-aligned political action committees (Pacs) and groups starting last year, but his efforts didn’t pay off. Democrats won every one of the five Senate races where Musk’s America Pac spent the most money backing Republican candidates. Carter Sherman and Kai Wright are joined by the Guardian’s tech editor Blake Montgomery (@blakersdozen) to ask what the ‘blue tsunami’ will mean for Musk and the wider tech industry. Will this spell the end for Elon and AI datacenters? Hear their conversation at the link in bio. 06 Nov 2026 “Are we at this once in a generation market crash?” Global tech stocks have plunged after the Democrats’ victory in the US midterm elections, with fears of a slowdown in AI development. Major tech corporations including Apple, Tesla and Nvidia shed about $1tn in a single trading session. Is this stock market jitters, or a sign the AI bubble might be about to burst? Lucy Hough speaks to senior economics correspondent Richard Partington. How should the UK make amends for its legacy of slavery? The prime minister, Andy Burnham, has pledged a “new approach” with Commonwealth countries whose people were enslaved by the UK, offering the opportunity for the affected African and Caribbean countries to help shape the wording of an official apology. He announced the approach at a summit in Antigua this week, but says the UK will not pay reparations because British people should not be held responsible for centuries-old crimes.  How should the UK account for this devastating history, which has caused widespread racial inequalities that exist to this day? The Guardian’s political correspondent Aletha Adu (@alethaadu) explains why an apology may only be the beginning. 06 Nov 2026 For too long, cases involving young women alleging rape after going initially willingly to the bedrooms of rich or famous men have ended in sour, uneasy acquittals. Well, not any more, writes Gaby Hinsliff. This verdict upholds the vital principle that consent to one thing is not consent to absolutely everything; that women still absolutely have the right to say no, even if they have in the past said yes. During the prime minister’s visit to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda, Downing Street said affected countries would play an indispensable role in crafting an enduring message. Though the plans for talks were received positively, the British government is still ruling out the idea of paying reparations, which for decades campaigners have been calling for. #EnslavementLegacy #Reparations #Commonwealthsummit #AndyBurham #Antigua #KingCharles Watch the full episode on YouTube- link in bio. 05 Nov 2026
