Guillermo del Toro has made no secret of the fact that “absolutely no goddamn AI” was used any step of the way in bringing the 2006 film Pan's Labyrinth to theaters in both 4K and 3D for the very first time.
“It’s much more expensive… I don’t care,” del Toro said, speaking about the painstaking process. “What we’re protecting is the beauty and redeeming power of art. We are protecting a lineage of art.”
But how many human artists were part of the process? Guillermo del Toro reveals this week that around 1,300 human artists were required to bring new life to Pan’s Labyrinth.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker explains, “I dare say there’s more than 1,300 people that worked on it. I don’t want to say the exact number, but I think I’m right. We started last year, but we did it in increments. First it was a test, to see if we could do it. And I was so blown away that we decided to go for it.”
Along with the 3D version and the 4K restoration, Pan’s Labyrinth has been given a new color grade and sound mix. Indiewire details, “the 3D conversion retains the spirit and emotional impact of the film del Toro made 20 years ago while taking advantage of several technological advancements that have transpired in the years since.”
Aaron Parry of SDFX Studios oversaw the film’s 3D conversion, and he tells Indiewire that Del Toro insisted the texture and grain of Pan’s Labyrinth remain in tact for the 3D version.
Parry details during his conversation with Indiewire, “He wanted to really say, this is the film, but playing it in 3D is going to add so many more layers of fear and anxiety and mystery. So we worked really hard to be non-destructive and preserve everything.”
Parry continues, “Pan’s Labyrinth made a lot of sense [in 3D], because you’ve got the real world and the fantasy world, and we can use 3D to separate those story points and tell the story in a new and elevated way. Guillermo just wanted to bring people deeper into the story, and I think 3D was his solution.”
The 20th anniversary re-release of Guillermo del Toro’s masterpiece Pan’s Labyrinth opens in theaters TONIGHT.

The draw for entries for the 20th anniversary Pan’s Labyringht sculpture ends on Oct 9 at 8am PT (Guillermo’s Birthday!) @jamesjeanstore
For @panslabyrinth20, I’ve partnered with @gdtreal and the master sculptors at @elitecreaturecollectibles to bring an inspiration two decades in the making to life.
Born from the recurring symbol of the crescent moon that marks Ofelia’s journey, the piece flows between two contrasting worlds bridged by the iconic Faun.
While past renderings of the Faun have focused on dark, earthy tones, this sculpture introduces a ghostly, luminous aesthetic. Featuring a light blue-green patina with vibrant orange peeking from the crevices, the piece feels like a living memory, radiating the timeless soul of the film from within.
