We spend a lot of our time framing Cubs history. This season the Cubs sent some our way.
Our friends at Wrigley Field gifted us our very own pinstripes, along with a handwritten note we’ll be rereading for a long time. Of course we had to build it a proper home. We designed a custom shadowbox with a scoreboard rail inspired by the iconic Wrigley Field scoreboard: the line score across the top, GO CUBS down one side, and AT BAT 26 with the ball, strike and out lights along the bottom. The note is matted in Wrigley green and floated right below the number.
We feel lucky to call the Cubs a partner. An organization this big could work with anyone, and they keep choosing local, family-owned shops. That support keeps neighborhood businesses open and keeps jobs and craftsmanship right here in Chicago. Thank you for trusting us with the work we do for you at the ballpark. It means a lot to our family to be part of the 150th season.

Pink Noise, meet gold. ✨
German painter David Uessem builds his portraits on hyperrealism, detail so precise you lean in to check that it’s really paint. His signature move is hiding the subject’s eyes behind something dazzling like jewels, sequins or a pop-culture shape. That leaves you with only the lips and posture to read, so it’s glamour and mystery at the same time.
In Pink Noise, a faceted ruby mask turns into Mickey ears, playful and a little unsettling, and impossible to look away from.
We gave it a hand-textured gold moulding with a pebbled, reptile-like finish that catches the light the way her gems do. A piece this bold called for a frame that could hold its own.

Vertical Gallery’s kaleidoscopic group exhibition ‘ASCENDING’ spotlights close to four dozen artists from across the urban-contemporary landscape — mainstays of our ongoing programming efforts, old friends returning after extended absences and new friends exhibiting with us for the very first time.
Chicago-based conceptual artist E.LEE needs no introduction to longtime Vertical patrons, but the depth and complexity of ”Picture No. 04” and “Picture No. 05,” the two pieces he created for ‘ASCENDING,’ demanded further inquiry.
“They seem at first to be pictures in frames. But when you look a bit closer at the middle, where the image is supposed to be, there doesn’t seem to be an image at all. You just see stripes or dots: a pattern that doesn’t represent anything outside of itself. And the more you look, the harder it becomes to tell where the picture ends and the frame begins,” E.LEE (@_e.lee_) says.
“These works create the idea of something that isn’t actually there. There is no frame. There is no glass. There is no ‘picture’ in the middle. But dividing the surface into a center and an outside creates a hierarchy. The individual elements are abstract, but their relationship to one another creates the representation.”
There’s much more on E.LEE’s inspirations and aspirations in the debut of Vertical’s newest web-exclusive series, Process Spotlight. Link in bio.
‘ASCENDING,’ presented in partnership with Frame Chicago (@framechicago), runs through Oct. 18 at 1627 N. Clybourn Ave.

Life is hard. You will be challenged. And then you will get through it. No rain. No flowers. — Cristina Martinez
She painted “No Rain, No Flowers” in a trance, then painted it ten feet tall on brick in Seattle’s Pioneer Square, first stroke to last.
So we framed it in rain: 24 gloss-black bubbles, fitted by hand, one by one. The frame doesn’t hold the piece. It finishes the thought.

ASCENDING was a night.
Vertical Gallery brought together 44 artists from 11 countries and gave them a simple brief: no prescribed theme, just the freedom to create.
And the artists put on a show.
Above You. From the Top. Flight. Sky’s the Limit. Balance in Chaos. Protect My Energy. Always With You. Light of the Infinite. Inherited Horizons. And, fittingly, Ascending.
Different artists. Different countries. Different stories. Yet when Vertical brought the work together at Frame Chicago, it felt like it belonged in the same conversation.
Chicago filled the room. The art took over the walls. And our first exhibition together became an incredible night of art, conversation and community.
@petiteedith_chicago made it even better, bringing their warm hospitality and creative cocktails and keeping the room buzzing.
Opening night may be over, but ASCENDING is still very much here.
On view through October 18 at Frame Chicago. We’re open 7 days a week, so come in, take your time and experience what Vertical Gallery and these 44 artists have brought together.

"Protect My Energy" functions as a mantra and prayer in my daily life. Since I have slowed down, it serves as a gentle reminder that I am guided, and that all experiences encountered are either blessings or lessons.
