Cannes ended a few weeks ago and every year around this time I find myself thinking back to 2018 when I had the chance to design the Festival’s official poster. I wanted to share a bit of the story behind it. The project took months of research, hundred of photographs and more than 50 different versions before I finally came across this image by Georges Pierre, taken on the set of Pierrot le Fou: JP Belmondo and Anna Karina sharing a kiss. When I first saw it, I actually hesitated because the photograph was so horizontal. It didn’t seem like an obvious choice for a poster. But the image was so beautiful that I wanted to make it work. I had to rebuild height and remove everything that felt unnecessary. For the large panoramic version displayed on the Palais des Festivals, I also reconstructed Anna Karina’s car and part of Belmondo’s by hand (long before AI could do that in a few seconds). For the typography, I wanted something very discreet. The text runs vertically through the poster guiding the eye down towards the couple before fading into the sunset behind them. Eight years later, I’m still very attached to this poster. It remains one of the most memorable projects I’ve had the chance to work on. 15 Jun 2026
