Black History Month is not only about looking back. It is also about recognising what we are building now. When I founded Dr Sharon Belmo Dermatology, I created the UK’s first and only private dermatology practice specialising in Black skin and Afro-textured hair. I wanted Black patients to have somewhere their skin, scalp and hair would be understood and treated properly. This month, I’m also opening the clinic doors to medical students, giving them the opportunity to learn about Black skin and Afro-textured hair through consultations with Black patients. It’s the kind of experience I wish I’d had during my own training, and I’m so pleased to be able to offer it to the next generation of doctors. This exposure should be part of every medical student’s education. This Black History Month, I’m proud of what the clinic means to our community—and happy to share that work with those who will care for us next. 👩🏾‍⚕️ 05 Oct 2026 Get to Know Dr Sharon Belmo. ✨ Scottish by birth, Ghanaian by heritage, and London-based by choice, Dr Sharon Belmo is a consultant dermatologist on a mission to make skin and hair care inclusive. From accurate diagnosis to safe medical treatment plans, deeper tones require expertise – not guesswork. And I’m proud to offer the UK’s first dedicated private dermatology service for people of colour. Expert care. It’s actually a boring one: an anti-dandruff shampoo. I treat seborrhoeic dermatitis all the time. Sometimes it’s the main problem, and sometimes it’s sitting in the background alongside other scalp conditions such as, CCCA, androgenetic alopecia or traction alopecia. Seborrhoeic dermatitis happens when there’s an overgrowth of yeast on the scalp, causing inflammation, flaking and itching. Anti-dandruff shampoos are generally antifungal. They work by reducing the yeast and helping to normalise the scalp microbiome. How I recommend using it: treat it as a scalp treatment. Apply it to your scalp, leave it on for about 10 minutes, rinse, then carry on with your usual wash day routine. If flaking, itching or hair loss keeps coming back, it’s worth getting your scalp properly assessed. Link in bio to book a consultation. Save this for your next wash day 🤎 #scalphealth #blackhaircare #skinofcolour #blackdermatologist #dermatologistrecommended 03 Nov 2026 I’m 44, I’m a dermatologist, and my skincare routine is probably simpler than you would expect. I’m often asked what I use or what I do, but I think just as much about what my skin actually needs. Every new product or trend doesn’t need a place in my bathroom. A simple routine you can stick to will go far, especially if like me, you have no business (or time) doing 10 step routines! As much as skin care is important, always remember, genetics and general health play a huge role too... #dermatologist #blackdermatologistuk #blackpracticeowner #blackbusiness #blackbeauty blackselfcare 26 Oct 2026 Representation in dermatology is about more than visibility. It shapes who feels able to enter the specialty, which concerns are recognised, and how comfortable patients feel describing their skin and hair. I am proud to be part of that change, and hopeful for the doctors who will follow. To every patient who has ever felt their concerns were overlooked, your care deserves the same understanding and expertise as anyone else's. 21 Oct 2026 Sunscreen is SO important for all skin types. @drsharonbelmo explains why skin cancer can be caught later in darker skin tones. Know your skin, check it often, and speak to a doctor if you notice any changes.
