“Braces when they still have baby teeth?!” 🤔 Fair question. Phase 1 treatment can help some kids, but not every child needs it. In our offices, the question is simple: Is there a clear benefit to treating now, or is it better to wait? Early treatment may help create space for incoming adult teeth, correct certain crossbites, or address tooth appearance when a child feels self-conscious, especially if they’re being teased. Those are just a few reasons we may consider it. And sometimes our recommendation is: “Let’s keep watching as they grow.” That’s a treatment decision, too. 🙌 The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends an initial orthodontic evaluation by age 7. An evaluation doesn’t automatically mean braces! Phase 1 also doesn’t guarantee your child won’t need braces later. The clock was ticking. My hands were steady. My artistic ability was about to betray me. Less than 10 minutes to submit this pumpkin to the contest. Loupes on. Light on. Borrowed paint pens ready. Years of training had prepared me for this moment. Apparently, the wrong training. I made the deadline. The pumpkin made a strong case for last place. 🎃 Special thanks to my wife and kids for lending me their paint pens, which I promptly returned to their correct place when I got home.
