A tooth can turn yellow because it produces more dentin, pink because it loses tissue from within, or gray because its pulp has stopped living. Even some antibiotics can leave permanent pigments on the teeth while they are forming. The color you see can reveal what is happening inside the tooth.
1. Pulpar calcification:
After a trauma, the tooth can produce additional dentin that progressively narrows the pulp space. This can give it a more yellowish tone.
How is it treated? If the tooth is healthy, it usually only needs follow-up. If the discoloration affects the aesthetics, the dentist may recommend professional whitening. Calcification alone does not require endodontics.
2. Internal reabsorption:
In this condition, the tissue inside the tooth begins to destroy part of the dentin surrounding the pulp canal. This can be related to a trauma or a previous lesion of the pulp. When it affects the crown, a pinkish stain may appear.
How is it treated? If the tooth can still be preserved, it usually needs endodontics to stop the process and seal the canal. If the loss of structure is too extensive, it may be impossible to save it.
3. Pulpar necrosis:
The pulp contains nerves and blood vessels. When it loses its vitality due to trauma or infection, the degrading products can penetrate the dentin and darken the tooth, which acquires gray or brown tones.
How is it treated? Endodontics allow cleaning and sealing of the canals to preserve the tooth. Then, the color can be improved through internal whitening or an aesthetic restoration. Although the tooth is preserved, the pulp does not regain its vitality.
4. Tetracycline staining:
These antibiotics can be incorporated into the dental tissues during their formation and produce yellow, brown, or grayish stains, sometimes distributed in bands.
How is it treated? Professional whitening can lighten the discoloration, although intense stains are more difficult to remove. If the result is not sufficient, veneers or crowns can improve the appearance, depending on the condition of the tooth.
