This Mondays monologist is… the one and only Dan Wilcop! iO’s Technical Director Dan Wilcop is a multi-disciplinary artist who cut his teeth in theater tech, comedy, and improv as a core member of the Chicago DIY institution The Shithole. From 2013–2020, he produced over 550 live events featuring 10,000+ performers and served as Musical Director for its house team Gnar Gnar Shredtown. He is also the co-creator of iO’s tech-forward shows The Orbit and The Room is Alive and frequently SMs and MDs for Sand. With more than a decade of experience in woodworking, fabrication, audio, video, and lighting, he remains active in the DIY scene through the Secret River Show and The High Hall, showcasing music and drag respectively. #SecretRiverTheatre S2 🧚Yellow Dragonfly: I’m totally in awe of Dan😍, our King of the River’s Bro — Tech Captain extraordinaire👍. He’s so tall, so cool! 🫦Every device obeys his command🦾. When he stands shirtless on the river stage running the sound, he’s like a Titan holding up the sky🧜‍♂️. And when he pulls boats from the riverbank, he looks like Apollo himself ruling the fleet. Seriously, who wouldn’t swoon? ⚡️ 🧞‍♀️Nymph: I’m absolutely smitten with Bro Liam☺️. He quietly rows back and forth between the Dolphin stage and shore like a true charmer. When he calls out “Captain!” 🫡and salutes Lawrence Tome, my heart skips a beat❤️And when he hugs his guitar and sings, I just want to live in his dimples🫠. Last show, he “surprisingly” found many roses floating on the river and carefully picked them up one by one🌹 — so sweet! He decorated the stage with them and later gathered them all back with warmth — planning to give them to his date! 🤫I loved his happy smile but felt a little wistful: little did he know, each rose hided a secret nymph crushing hard on him🌹 🚣‍♂️Don Quixote (The Boat): When the show ends and everyone leaves happily buzzing, Bros team up with Lawrence Tome to dump the dirty water in my belly. I’m playing bass in WILEM on Saturday 8/2 at the California Clipper! Music has always been something I did alone in my room. Like almost everything I’m involved in, I am completely self taught. For years I thought that was a weakness and not a strength. Last October @lookatgoob asked if I would play bass in his band @wilemband . It’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Playing music with others is how it’s meant to be experienced, and I’ve only gotten better because of it. Very excited to play some shows this summer💛 01 Aug 2025

I’m thrilled to announce that I’m the new Technical Director of the world-renowned iO Theater! Improv, comedy, and live show production entered my life 11 years ago, at a time when I felt completely directionless. I was lucky enough to find myself in the right place at the right time—moving into a three-story house with 8 artists I barely knew through my first long-term partner. The very same night I moved in, I attended the second-ever Shithole show. Zach Bartz and Kevin Gerrity, who heard that I dabbled in music production for fun, approached me after the show and asked if I’d be interested in helping with sound (and later lights). Our first “PA” system was a $100 boombox. Our stage lighting was two Home Depot work lamps. Shithole became a platform for me to showcase my skills, learn how to collaborate, and face my fear of performing in front of crowds. It was the first time I truly felt part of a community built from the ground up. That experience taught me responsibility, accountability, and the importance of understanding other perspectives. I’m forever grateful to everyone who helped create that magic—whether they were in the original garage, climbing three flights of stairs to the attic, or attending one of the hundreds of pop-up shows around Chicago. Now, I’m excited to bring the lessons I learned in the DIY scene to the more traditional world of comedy theater. I’m committed to staying curious, always learning, and supporting others along the way. I can’t wait to help shape the future of iO and contribute to its legacy. 18 Nov 2024
