After three years of traveling to festivals and meeting audiences from all around the world, I’m so emotional to finally share that The Sun Sets On Beirut is now available to watch on @shortoftheweek. Thank you @iceln for your beautiful words. Getting to know you was the highlight of my year! This film was born out of the 4th of August Beirut blast - a wound that still hasn’t healed. We have no justice for the victims or for our beloved city. The people in power remain in power, yet I believe we as a people have changed. The fight is still long, and I hope the film can be a small attempt to reflect on the generation growing up away from home, forced to carry this legacy with them. When we made this film, we shot in pure survival mode. It was a way for us all to process what we were feeling at the time. Only later did we realise the film we had done - capturing a lost generation on screen. This journey has brought me sadness, joy, and above all humility towards the people I work with, and towards cinema itself, and the power it holds to carry memory and resistance. Daniela Stephan is a Lebanese screenwriter and director based between London and Beirut. Having grown up in Lebanon, she is drawn to coming of age stories and the ways political events shape intimate lives. Her work often explores the tension between personal desires and larger historical realities. Her latest short film, The Sun Sets on Beirut (2022), screened internationally at festivals including the Oscar-qualifying Tampere Film Festival, Winterthur Kurzfilmtage, and is now available on Short of the Week. Her previous short, Mummy Blue (2021), also screened internationally and received several awards. Daniela is currently developing her debut feature film, Underbelly, a coming-of-age story set in Beirut in the months leading up to the 2006 war. The project is currently in development and has participated in programmes including the Red Sea Lodge 2026 x Film Independent, and has been shortlisted for TorinoFilmLab and the BFI Feature Film Fund. Daniela has also been selected to serve on the International Shorts Jury at the Marrakech Short Film Festival 2026. 15 Sep 2026
