I met Peter Medák on the beach in Malibu, when he was directing The Men’s Club with Roy Scheider and Treat Williams. Of course, I was in awe because of his bonkers masterpiece, The Ruling Class. I was then lucky to be directed by him in a bonkers episode of China Beach. But thanks to Ron Perlman bringing Peter on to direct Hand of God in 2014, I fell in love with him. His work at that point was visually stunning and so alive. It didn’t matter the medium, he wasn’t a snob-he just loved to direct. But the man himself was a masterpiece. To hear his stories of escaping Hungary, working in London in the 60’s and his love for film is something I cherish. We went to see the 7 hour version of Bondarchuk’s War and Peace and he gave me lists of films to watch. He had a melancholy heart and a school boy’s enthusiasm. To see the true Peter, watch The Ghost of Peter Sellers. It was an unfinished quest of his, an apology, a search for what went wrong. Only to realize nothing did-every act of creation is a leap of faith. I was always remember Peter in his crisp white shirt saying, “Dana, dahling…” He was a gift. 29 Oct 2026

From my visit to Père-Lachaise on a beautiful late summer day. I was fascinated by the offerings people choose to leave. Colette and her cats. Annie Girardot with a loving message from her family. Simone Signoret and Yves Montand, together always. With Cesar and Rosalie. Teo Hernandez, a director I don’t know with a great film title. Marcel Proust and his madeleine. Edith Piaf, La vie en rose lunettes. Modigliani and colored pencils. But my favorite is Gertrude Stein. Simple, elegant. And Alice B. I’ve known Dana Delany for a long time, and getting to sit down with her for this conversation felt especially meaningful.
