The Direction of Light I have always loved photography, the ritual of it, the artifact of capturing an image. But at the center of it has always been light. Photography was how I learned to follow it, and through it, how I learned to see the world outside of myself. I still point light out to my daughter. How it behaves, how it bounces between things, how it changes color, form, and the way something feels. Through all these observations, I thought I was teaching her how to notice the world around her. How to move through it with awareness. Part of me still likes to think I am. But watching her notice, seeing that moment of discovery through her eyes, slowly changed the way the same light reached me. Somehow, her way of seeing became the lens through which I could look at things I thought I already knew. And the focus shifted. For the first time, inward. I wasn’t sure what to do with what it was revealing. The act of photographing feels different now. I’m curious about these inner landscapes, and about what happens when that awareness enters the act of creation. Everything I’ve accumulated over the years is still there, the influences, instincts and ways of seeing. But they seem to be rearranging themselves into something I can’t quite articulate yet. I want to see where they take me when the direction of looking changes. I think of that friction as a threshold, somewhere between what I already know how to see and what I am only beginning to uncover. There is something exciting in that uncertainty. It feels less like starting over and more like rediscovering why I started looking in the first place. Maybe that is the chase now. 25 Aug 2026
