Behind the scenes of creating the choir section for “Mauna.” I had a few friends help bring more depth to the final recording, but it was also fun layering different takes together to create that choir feeling. Eō is a Hawaiian response used to answer a call. It can mean “here I am,” “I am here,” or “yes,” but to me it also carries a feeling of presence, readiness, and connection. This word holds a lot of power for me. I remember hearing “Eō!” often during the Protect Mauna Kea movement. When I hear it now, I’m taken back to the unity of that moment and the reminder that sacred places deserve reverence and protection. Beautiful. Powerful. If we don’t stand for the mountain, who will? This question sits at the heart of my song “Mauna.” “Mauna” means mountain. I wrote it during the time people came together to protect Mauna Kea. Seeing that unity was powerful. It reminded me that progress means nothing if we lose respect for what’s sacred. Growing up in the islands, I remember visiting family graves, cleaning them, sitting in stillness. Places like the Haʻamonga or the shores of Pangai. You feel it when you’re there. The mana. The reverence. The connection. This song is about remembering that these places matter. Bridging generations. Holding onto what was passed down while moving forward together. Because strength isn’t just in progress. It’s in unity. It’s in respect. And it doesn’t stop at the mountain. Our homes can be sacred too, if we choose to treat them that way. Family. Unity. Faith. Some places never leave you. Liahona EP | May 1st This one’s been on my heart for a few years now. I’m excited to share this first chapter with you. The idea is simple 3 places that shaped me 3 tracks for each place Liahona, Lā’ie, and Lehi Starting with Liahona, a small town on Tongatapu where I grew up until I was 11. A lot of who I am started there. The photo here is me and my siblings. I’m the youngest of four. Life in Liahona was perfect to me. Almost like a dream. Bare feet. No worries. The whole community looked after each other. Life was just simpler. This project is me reflecting on things I learned as a kid that stayed with me. Track List: 1. Mauna (Mountain) This one takes me back to visiting family graves and sacred places. Learning to slow down, show respect… and feel something deeper. Some places are worth standing for, spiritually and literally. 2. Fuel To My Fire That feeling of doubt, pressure, and proving people wrong, including yourself. If you’ve ever carried that, this one’s yours. 3. Mr. North Star Anything about direction and navigation reminds me of growing up in Tonga. Had to bring this one back in a simple acoustic way. All three tracks are stripped back on purpose. Just acoustic. Just feeling. No overthinking. I just want these songs to exist. Maybe I’ll produce them one day, but right now, they feel right. Let’s talk about AI for a second. I’ll keep it real. There’s a place for it. I use it for work. But like everything, it comes with trade-offs. Last year I started a 3-track project. I was two songs deep when I found an AI tool called Suno. It was so good that I let it knock me off course. I stopped working on the original project and went down the rabbit hole. I dusted off old ideas. Wrote new ones. Let Suno bring songs to life that had been sitting in my head for 20+ years. Now I’ve got about 20 tracks I’m genuinely pumped about. But here’s the truth. AI is impressive. The ideas are there. The vibe is there. But the stems (the individual track layers) aren’t always clean. You hear artifacts. Thin sounds. Corners cut. It doesn’t always pass the ear test. And I think we’re slowly lowering the bar without realizing it. I hear the low quality sound in AI ads every day. And I just can’t bring myself to be fully okay using it yet. The bigger issue though? It paralyzed me. AI made it easy to create things I could never afford to produce… and somehow that abundance stalled me. I stopped creating. Until my brother @caysonrenshaw texted me at just the right time. “Let’s get back at it.” Then I found out my other brother @stephenhmusic was in town and had an afternoon to work on track 3 of 3. Funny enough the song is called “Fuel to My Fire.” Fitting, right? It’s about doubt, belief, and keeping your foot on the gas. Exactly what I needed to remind myself. So we got to work. And I feel momentum again! Grateful for brothers who feel like divine timing. Grateful for the reminder to keep building with what I’ve been given. I don’t know when these tracks will drop. But I’m closer today than I was yesterday. Use AI. Experiment. Explore. Publish even. Just don’t let it replace your own edge. Don’t let it dull your ear. Had to put the spectacles on for this one 🤓 Happy New Year, y’all. I’ve been thinking tonight about how fast time moves. It’s been about 20 years since I released “Wise Words,” and I still hear these lines in my head like they are coaching me through life. I wrapped up the day in the office messing with a new fun remix version. The original released track has a rap from my bro Maitrea (I’m definitely not a rapper), but when I play Wise Words without him live I’d do these bars, and this version gives me enough room to vibe and share these lyrics nicely.
