RE: Wab Kinew’s Indian Act Abolishment statement: I question what the way forward is; I see a lot of community members express concern about the municipalization of reserves and not being in favour of that. Treaties still aren’t honoured. So what exactly is the full solution? What would happen to reserve lands? We can’t even get a quick ATR process. So without a full strategy forward, I don’t see it happening anytime soon. There are a myriad of issues that would require a real hard look. Pretendianism, lands and who governs them, inherent and treaty rights, taxation, enforcement of First Nation laws- to name a few. If we abolish the Indian act but maintain status quo, then it’s just the same thing with a different name. And because we are under such different circumstances as diverse Indigenous Nations, there may unfortunately always be some kind of race-based legislation… unless each Nation became truly sovereign with our own court systems, tribunals, modes of operating (that aren’t modelled after municipalities). I definitely don’t have a solution. It’s going to take unity, and lots of talks. I also wish the ministers meeting was live-streamed like AFN assemblies are. It’s been a whirlwind of responsibility, sadness, and coming together. I’m grateful to support my partner, kids, mom and aunties and uncles while we navigate this time.
