New York, beneath the surface. On 4 November, Canali celebrated Under the Surface — Shaping the Unseen at Glasshouse Chelsea, in the Chelsea Arts Tower. Alongside artist Brian Rochefort, guests explored the dialogue between his new ceramic sculptures and the sartorial culture behind every Canali jacket. Friends of the brand, including Canali global brand ambassador @ethanhawke, gathered for an evening of art, tailoring and conversation, with heartfelt thanks to everyone who shared it. From the Galápagos and the Amazon to East Africa, Brian Rochefort’s travels return in his work as abstract forms: craters, coral formations, mineral deposits, eroded landscapes. Born in Rhode Island and based in Los Angeles, the artist talks about a practice built on ceramic processes, glaze chemistry and a deep interest in geology, and about the dialogue with Canali. Ceramic and fabric speak different languages, yet both depend on research, precision and successive layers. In Rochefort’s sculptures, those layers rise to the surface and reveal themselves. Greens, browns and ochres. Then blues and violets. And, deep below, flashes of red. Commissioned by Canali for the New York chapter of Under the Surface, Brian Rochefort’s new ceramic sculptures take the form of vessels, an archetype rooted in the history of human culture. The artist prepares his own clay bodies, then builds each work through successive firings, as glazes, slips, pigments and glass accumulate, pool, crack and crystallise. The result is a surface that rises and folds like a geological landscape, holding the history of its own making. Every layer holds a decision. Together, they give a creation its character. Under the Surface — Shaping the Unseen moves to the United States. In New York, Canali brings its sartorial culture into dialogue with the ceramic sculptures of Los Angeles-based artist Brian Rochefort. In his studio, forms are built, broken apart and reconfigured, layer after layer. In a Canali jacket, hundreds of tailoring gestures bring fabric, canvas and reinforcements into balance. Phase 8 — The jacket remembers its shape. Final pressing is not simply a finishing touch, but a true shaping operation. On dedicated anatomical forms, the shoulders, collar, chest and back are defined with precision until the jacket reaches its final balance. The fibers settle and the construction stabilizes, giving the garment what Canali calls its memory: the ability to be worn, folded or packed and naturally return to its original form. #Canali1934 #UnderTheSurface 02 Nov 2026

Phase 7 — Structure becomes movement. The shoulder is one of the most complex parts of the jacket to construct, requiring months of training to master. Outer fabric, canvas, padding and reinforcements converge, while tension and volume are calibrated with extraordinary precision. The result is a shoulder that is structured without rigidity, precise without constraint — engineered to move naturally with the body. #Canali1934 #UnderTheSurface 01 Nov 2026

Phase 6 — The lapel finds its natural roll. The lapel is secured to the inner canvas through a dense network of pad stitches, a technique rooted in the traditional tailor’s fishbone stitch and performed at Canali with highly specialized machinery. More than 1,400 stitches are used in the inner canvas alone — a density Canali does not compromise on. Together, they shape the lapel’s natural roll, three-dimensionality and ability to retain its line over time. #Canali1934 #UnderTheSurface 31 Oct 2026

Phase 5 — Time settles the construction Fabric and canvas are shaped and pressed on forms that reproduce the human anatomy before being brought together. Through basting, pressing and a sequence of precise operations, they begin to work as one. The jacket is then left to rest, allowing steam to dissipate and the fibers to stabilize. Here, time is not a pause in the process. It is part of the process. #Canali1934 #UnderTheSurface 30 Oct 2026
