Today, we unveiled our newest Remembrance Day stamp honouring Force 136 at the Chinese Canadian Museum in Vancouver. During the Second World War, Chinese Canadians played a vital role in secret Allied operations in Asia. About 150 Chinese Canadians volunteered to behind enemy lines. Their mission: destroy enemy infrastructure, gather intelligence and support local resistance efforts. Their courageous service helped win the war, but it also dismantled racial barriers at home. After the war, these veterans helped Chinese Canadians restore voting rights and repeal the anti-Chinese immigration law in 1947. Read more at the link in our bio. This year’s Diwali stamp features an illustration of a woman’s hands as she strings together marigolds and mango leaves to make a traditional torana. The elaborate decorations are intended to welcome guests and invite the goddess Lakshmi to bestow good fortune on those who enter. Traditional toranas often include mango-tree leaves, which are believed to ward off negativity and purify the air. Visit the link in our bio to purchase. In honour of this celebration, Canada Post employees were invited to recognize their local branch with a special “thank you” plaque. From informal get-togethers to larger community events, their photos offer a glimpse of how they marked the Legion’s century of service to veterans, their families and communities. Chinese Canadians faced a long history of racial discrimination and anti-Chinese sentiment across the country, including being denied the right to vote, and exclusion from certain professions. Despite this, many saw enlistment as a way to demonstrate their commitment to Canada and to press for change. Approximately 150 Chinese Canadians were recruited and served with either Force 136, part of Britain’s Special Operations Executive, or with Australia’s Services Reconnaissance Department for dangerous missions behind enemy lines. Their service became part of a broader push for change at home. The 1923 Chinese Exclusion Act was repealed in 1947 and Chinese Canadians regained the right to vote. Despite facing racial discrimination at home, about 150 Chinese Canadians stepped forward in 1944 to train for dangerous missions behind Japanese lines. Recruited for their language skills and ability to operate in Japanese-occupied Asia, they trained in espionage, guerrilla warfare, parachuting, and jungle survival. By the end of the Second World War, more than 600 Chinese Canadians had served in all three branches of the Canadian military. For many, military service was also a way to prove their commitment to a country that denied them equal rights. Their contributions became part of the broader movement toward the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act and Chinese Canadians gaining the right to vote in 1947. The new stamp features a 1945 photograph of Chinese Canadian soldiers awaiting repatriation, overlaid with the red phoenix insignia of Force 136. The unit's name appears in English, French, and Traditional Chinese, while the Official First Day Cover features a Vancouver cancellation mark depicting the Burma Star. Today's unveiling brought together veterans' families and special guests, including Brent G. Hoy, whose father Charlie Hoy served with Force 136, and Rick Wong, whose father Hank Wong served with Australia's Services Reconnaissance Department. The event also featured remarks from Mayor Pete Fry and Brandt Louie. The occasion also comes with another meaningful honour. "A Soldier for All Seasons", the museum's permanent exhibition, has received the 2026 Project of Excellence Award from the Organization of Military Museums of Canada. Thank you to Canada Post, the veterans’ families, and everyone who helped bring this important piece of Canadian history to light. The Force 136 stamp will be available beginning Nov. 4 at the museum's retail store @1889tradingco and at Canada Post outlets across the country and online at canadapost.ca. 03 Nov 2026 We’re sew in love with our quilts stamps!
