Exactly 10 years ago, MAAT opened its doors for the first time, and a new cultural campus was born: a vibrant public space for Lisbon, Portugal and the world, with a museum, a large garden and no walls. It was also a major contribution from the private sector, demonstrating the power of civic initiative in dialogue with the City of Lisbon. What an extraordinary achievement—and what an amazing few days of celebration those were. The city came to a standstill for four days, and the pedestrian bridge had to be closed because so many people were standing on it. MAAT immediately became a cultural and architectural icon, in Lisbon and around the world, bringing art, technology and architecture together. A powerful expression of culture and civic responsibility. Congratulations to the visionaries who conceived and designed it, to EDP, to all the teams and individuals who made it possible, and to everyone who has carried that vision forward since. #HappyBirthday @maatmuseum #10anniversary 02 Oct 2026
