WEST COAST BEST COAST! This has to be the dream job for any photographer or videographer in New Zealand… or anywhere in the world, really. @barekiwi has spent last few months exploring, filming and photographing the incredible West Coast region, from Haast to Karamea and everywhere in between, for @westcoastnewzealand. Life for every Kōtuku White Heron in New Zealand starts here! Hidden away on the West Coast is one of New Zealand’s most special wildlife encounters. The Waitangiroto Nature Reserve is home to New Zealand’s only kōtuku (white heron) breeding colony, and thanks to @whiteheronsanctuarytours in @glaciercountrynz you can actually visit and witness these beautiful birds nesting, courting and raising their young! What makes this experience even more special is the family behind it. The Arnolds are a fifth-generation Whataroa family who have been running these tours since 1987. They’re not just sharing this incredible place with visitors, they’re actively helping protect it through conservation and predator control. The colony is strictly protected, but their guided tours take you into the reserve to a purpose-built viewing hide where you can watch all the action without disturbing the birds. Honestly, getting to see this up close was something else. Such a privilege to witness a part of New Zealand’s natural world that so few people get to experience. When the weather is bad, go where the bad weather is good! There is truly nowhere quite like Piopiotahi Milford Sound on a rainy day. I know travellers wish for blue skies but trust me, this is one places you WANT to experience in the rain. We were lucky enough to stay in the comfort of @milfordsoundlodge while capturing this. It’s so good to be back exploring the @westcoastnewzealand and travelling around in our @jayconewzealand caravan! Wild coastlines, ancient rainforests, towering mountains and some of the most spectacular scenery in Aotearoa. We’ve kicked things back off with an EPIC week exploring Haast and Jackson Bay hosted by the legends at @jacksonbaycharters @thecraypot_jacksonbay and @waiatotoriversafari. SOUTHERN FIORDLAND — NEW ZEALAND One of the most beautiful, wild and remote parts of Aotearoa that we’ve just had the privilege of exploring for 6 nights with @fiordlanddiscovery. The trip began with a boat trip across Lake Manapouri and coach ride over Wilmot Pass. After arriving in Doubtful Sound we slowly made our way south via Breaksea Sound and Dusky Sound, past Chalky Inlet—then it was into Preservation Inlet for our final night. Flying out of Long Sound to Te Anau with @southernlakeshelis was a massive highlight and an incredible way to end the trip.
