Barbara, aka Babsi here. I’m like espresso: small, focused, and definitely not a sleeping pill. I wake you up. I ask the extra question. I push for the clear version. And I have a soft spot for people who bring substance instead of noise. A few facts, because context matters. I’m a feminist, a mother, a founder and CEO, a Rotarian, and a proud Pelotonista. And yes, I’m a wine woman from scratch. I didn’t land in the wine world by accident. I worked my way into it, learned it from the ground up, and stayed because it’s one of the most human, cultural, and demanding worlds I know. You’ll also see “Bleuciel” around here. That’s a personal choice. A reminder I try to live by and share: be a gift to the world, and bring blue sky whenever you can. What makes me genuinely happy? Nebbiolo. Endless dinners with the right people. Smart podcasts that stay with me. Paris and NYC as a mood. Boots and shoes that feel like armour and freedom at the same time. Joie de vivre isn’t a slogan for me. It’s a choice, and it doesn’t mean losing substance. What I don’t like is equally clear: mansplaining, disrespect, discrimination, hate and rage, and shallow behaviour disguised as “just being honest.” I have no patience for anything that makes others smaller, quieter, or invisible. And yes, I struggle too. Small talk drains me. People ignoring German history makes me angry. Tradwife ideology is a hard no. Dry January is a real challenge. Add no lipstick days and small glasses to the list, and you get the full picture. If humanity, joie de vivre, and a bit of honest clarity are your thing, welcome. We should all be feminists. We should all be Vinissima. 321 likes · 12 comments · 25 Feb 2026 Just a Sunday afternoon…. If I am big, I want to live at a place where good tomatoes grow with some #bleuciel and decent wines. Easy. 36 likes · 2 comments · 01 Nov 2026 Some of you know me from ASI and think this is my job. Some of you know me from my job and think ASI is one of my customers. Some of you simply ask: what do you actually do in real life? Let me put this in order, 2 weeks after our great final in Lisbon. I am Barbara, aka Babsi, especially within ASI. I’m a bit like espresso ☕ small, focused and definitely not a sleeping pill. I’m a longtime declared feminist, a mother, a wife, a CEO, a Rotarian and a proud Pelotonista 🚴‍♀️ My job is Organize Communications in Karlsruhe, Zürich and Bozen, an agency for wine, food and hospitality communications founded in 1993. And yes, I’m a wine woman from scratch 🍇 I worked as a sommelier myself, but back then our profession had no further education and no support. So I moved into communications early. The love for wine and for sommeliers has stayed with me. So why do sommellerie and especially ASI fit into my life? For many years I have been involved in the Trophée Ruinart and worked with the German sommelier association. Long days, wonderful evenings, countless tastings, and friends for life 🤝 That is how my link to sommellerie started: with friendships. Some of them once stood in front of the jury as candidates. Many now serve ASI and national sommelier associations. Somms carried me and my agency forward, and I am grateful. Today I want to give something back. In my own time, as a volunteer in the Marketing Committee of @asisomms_. Mostly you find me behind a laptop, with a big smile and a lot of patience. My goal is to bring structure and professionalism to this diverse ASI family and to live openness, tolerance and respect ❤️ And we do this to make our profession better known and more valued worldwide. We want to build a stronger future for hospitality, wine, spirits, sake and everything that goes with it. The next generation of ASI sommeliers deserves our engagement today ✨ #ASISomms #ASIBestSomm #ASIBestSommelier2026 #ASIBSW2026 344 likes · 26 comments · 30 Oct 2026 🍷 What does it take to run a worldwide non-profit organisation like @asisomms_? Heart. Soul. Hands. And a lot of people who say: yes, I can, I do. To be honest, that is what I love most about my personal work for @asisomms_. Without these incredibly engaged, hands-on professionals and the tremendous support of our partners, it would all fail, and we would not be able to bring these important ambassadors for wine, spirits and more into the future. 🙌 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀. 80 highly professional volunteers rocked this championship, among them 50 passionate sommeliers from 33 countries. They prepared, they accompanied, they poured, they carried boxes, they calmed nerves and they made every guest feel at home. From the first masterclass to the last glass at the Bar des Sommeliers, they gave the contest their time, their energy and their big hearts. 💛 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆. Next to them stand our former ASI champions, who put together the demanding, brilliant tasks in the SCC, our dedicated ASI Board, our ASI Vice-Presidents Saiko, Mattias, Michèle and Piotr, our tireless ASI Secretary General Beata, a large part of our creative ASI Marketing Committee and of course the many, many warm-hearted supporters from the Portuguese sommelier association. 🍀 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀. None of this works without loyal partners. You support us throughout the year, with your generosity and your fantastic wines and products, and you believe in what we do. Thank you. And if you want to be part of this extraordinary family, we would love to hear from you. ✨ 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁. All of this is possible because of spirit, humanity and patience. Everything a good family needs. In a world that grows more absurd by the day, we stand for unshakable optimism and for the future of wine. 🤝 By the way: we are still looking for good partners, especially from the worlds of beer 🍺 and Champagne 🍾 and from more wine regions 🍇. They can be strong wineries 🍷 or whole regions 🗺️, niche brands 💎 just as much as global mentors 🌍. #ASISomms #ASIBestSomm #ASIBestSommelier2026 #ASIBSW2026❤️ 47 likes · 19 comments · 27 Oct 2026 ❤️ 28 likes · 0 comments · 23 Oct 2026 🍷 Female sommeliers outperformed the field in Lisbon: 38 percent of the women reached the semi-final, 28 percent of the men. 🙌🏼
✨ 13 started, 5 reached the semi-final, 1 the final. Here they are: Pascaline Lepeltier @pascalinelepeltier
Iwona Papathoma @ivino_here
Anke Hartmann @anke.c.hartmann
Yi Ying Yong @Yongyiying
Maria Boumpa @maria_boumpa 💪🏼 Never before did five women reach the semi-final of an ASI Contest Best Sommelier of the World. You dared to step onto the biggest stage of this wonderful and important profession, and you delivered. Each of you makes it easier for the next woman to walk in and believe she belongs there. 🥈 Dear Pascaline, you moved through the whole week with brilliance and a quiet serenity. You owned your result immediately and without excuses: “We are humans,” you said. That takes strength and class. Thank you for this. Second place in this very competitive field with so many qualified professionals is a triumph. Of course there is a touch of sadness, and we women in wine feel it together, as we already did in 2019 and 2023 for Nina Højgaard Jensen @vonjensen. We wish it had gone one step further. But we have to respect the result and the winner. Congratulations, Nikolai Haram Svorte @nikolaisvorte, ASI Best Sommelier of the World 2026. 💛 And to the eight other women: Alma Cabral @almitacabral, Oddný Ingólfsdóttir @oddnyingolfs, Soraiya Ladak @Siphappens_somm, Valeria Franco Cattoni @valeria.fc_, Patrícia Bačová @patric.ia._, Simona Česen @simonacesen, Emma Ziemann @vinsinnigt and Nebiye Kaya @knebbia. Thank you. 💡 The lesson of Lisbon: women are not missing in the results. They are missing at the start. Every national association nominates its own candidate. Four of the eleven ASI Sommeliers Contests Committee members are women: Saiko Tamura-Soga, VP Asia & Pacific, Paz Levinson and Véronique Rivest, Best Sommeliers of the Americas 2015 and 2011, and Heidi Makinen, MW. So please, find your women, train them, send them to gain experience in challenging international contests. 🥂 We cheer for all of you, and we are far from done and will improve. Next stop: ASI Best Sommelier of Europe 2027 in Poland 👏👏👏 224 likes · 24 comments · 23 Oct 2026 No words needed 44 likes · 21 Oct 2026 My thoughts after this exciting championship will not stand still. What makes this ASI family what it is? Where does our motivation come from, and I do not only mean the motivation of the candidates who fight for the world title, study and taste. One thing is clear: without sommeliers, the wine world would not be what it is. And I am convinced that sommeliers will gain much more importance in the future. In difficult times with declining wine consumption, we need positive ambassadors who do more than give recommendations. They convince: wine is pleasure, culture and craft, and it gives us the most beautiful moments at the table. Moderate consumption takes on a whole new meaning for all of us, and we must stand up for it with conviction. At @asisomms_ we unite the sommelier associations of the world. The ASI Contest Best Sommelier of the World 2026 confirmed that once again, impressively. 66 candidates, their presidents and delegations, guests and journalists from all over the world took part with excitement and enthusiasm. Our profession stands for passion, love of wine and the highest professionalism. That became clear once more. We love this profession. We love our motivated next generation. We love the experienced companions who have worked tirelessly for years to move Sommellerie forward. First and foremost @michelechantome, who was honoured this year with the Gerard Basset Lifetime Achievement Award. Congratulations, dear Michèle, you are a role model for all of us. I am very grateful that I was able to work and grow at your side. #ASISomms #ASIBestSomm #ASIBestSommelier2026 #ASIBSW2026 19 Oct 2026 Good things take time, and this one turned out beautifully. 3 years of preparation in countless Zoom calls and personal meetings. Obstacles in the way. Cleared away. We kept going… built team spirit… carried optimism out into the world. It worked. We had a wonderful week at the ASI Best Sommelier of the World in Lisbon. And we have a new ASI Best Sommelier of the World 2026 - congratulations @nikolaisvorte 🇳🇴 1. Norway - Nikolai Haram Svorte
🇫🇷 2. France - Pascaline Lepeltier
🇯🇵 3. Japan - Wataru Iwata @pascalinelepeltier and @ohmochi0422 - I want to do more than congratulate you. I want to thank you. For your patience and your resilience. I take my hat off to all 3 finalists, to your knowledge, your skill, your motivation. And I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your commitment to the world of wine and fine drinks. You are role models for our next generation. You carry an incredible humility and humanity. You show that our beloved profession is anything but shaped by arrogance and inaccessibility. Thank you. My congratulations go to all 66 candidates and especially to the 20 semi-finalists who came through a tough competition. You all have my deepest respect, and of course especially my “German” buddies @florian_fine_wine - 🇩🇪 Germany - Florian Richter and @anke.c.hartmann 🇮🇪 Ireland - Anke Hartmann, who entered the race for Ireland. A contest of this size does not happen on its own. Thank you to the 80 volunteers who gave their time and their hearts. Thank you to our hosts at AEP @sommeliers.escancoesdeportugal, to the Sommeliers Contests Committee, to the ASI sommeliers and to all our partners. You made this week something special. Sit back now? No, not at all… The next big events at ASI @asisomms_ are coming soon. From 24 to 28 May 2027, South Africa hosts the first ever continental contest for ASI Best Sommelier of Africa & Middle East, and from 6 to 10 September we find the ASI Best Sommelier of Europe in Poland. In June 2027 we will also learn who leads ASI as president and follows William Wouters. An exciting year lies ahead. #ASISomms #ASIBestSomm #ASIBestSommelier2026 #ASIBSW2026 18 Oct 2026 (no caption) 16 Oct 2026 (no caption) 15 Oct 2026
