šI'm so happy to join @homofaber! US makers now join their colleagues from around the world, so check out this amazing resource that is the the Homo Faber Guide (link in bio).
Homo Faber is a global cultural movement designed to celebrate and promote international contemporary craftsmanship and its diversity of makers, materials, and techniques. Presented by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship, its signature programs and events give visibility to craft artists across the globe while supporting and nurturing the next generation of makers.
At the heart of this movement is Homo Faber Guide, a digital platform that maps craftsmanship around the world. With new craft artists and countries added regularly, the Guide connects craft lovers, tastemakers, and travelers with master artisans, making it easier to explore a world of unique handcrafted objects. Special thanks to my assistant, Milo @eddiebrock.apologist,Ā who always goes above and beyond. Also huge thanks to photographer Michael D. Wilson of @mwphotographic, who is always up for anything and indulges me in recreating fun shots like the vacuum dunk even though I don't use it day to day anymore!Ā #homofaber #homofaber2026

RIP, Mum. Dr. Nancy S. Horie. Iām so lucky to have had a mother like mine. She let me be who I am & has always been my anchor. I wrote an obituary for her (link in bio), but here are some snippets here.
1. Mum was a prodigious reader and she bought as many books as she could carry to the register. This led to arthritis in her elbows from the weight of the bags.Ā
2. She was best friends with Eleanor for 93 ½ years (their mothers were friends when they were pregnant).
3. Mum volunteered at the hospital as a teenager and then worked at the same hospital for 40 years as an anesthesiologist.
4. There were still miscegenation laws in many states when my parents got married. She didnāt care or think twice, nor did her family.Ā
5. She worked at St Luke's hospital in Tokyo in the 60s.
6. Lucky me.
7. I had multiple mothers growing up- older cousins, aunts, my grandmother. She was never possessive and believed that being raised by a village was the best parenting.
8. She was very culturally adaptable and invariably interested in Japan.Ā
9. She got along with everybody and prioritized peace.
10. Dead deer. She was very matter-of-fact and simply explained things that were part of life. She always encouraged curiosity.
11. Good at gluing. Once she gave out antique stamps for Halloween which werenāt a hit.
12. My first time at Haystack.
13. She always thought my work was great even when it wasnāt. Grad school at UW. Encouragement is more important than critique, esp in the beginning.
14. She liked to roar with kids.
15. My parents traveled all over the world on birding trips for many years, usually freezing cold places or tropical places.
16. She loved being an armchair naturalist and sometimes a real life one.
17. She adored her grandkids and their art.
18. She would never stop hugging first.
19. She lived with us during the pandemic and it was awesome.
20. This expression exemplifies her inherent cheerfulness.
Thanks for reading this. Info on her upcoming Celebration of Life is in her obituary. Weāve set up a fund w/ @portlandpubliclibrary to increase access citywide, because the only thing she loved more than reading to herself was spreading the love of reading to others.

@manami.tokyo gave the kids this Miharu koma when we saw her in Tokyo last year. 2026 is the year of the horse and versions of this little folk toy have been around for at least 1,500 years. Traditionally, because they were made from the offcuts of wooden Buddhist statues, they are thought to have magical powers. If you don't already follow Manami Okazaki @manami.tokyo, I highly recommend her books like the two shown, plus she writes extensively about Japanese subcultures and cultural phenomena, including tattoos, sneakers, cats, kokeshi, food, mingei, basically connecting the dots for the rest of us. Here's to more of Manami's world in this new year!
