From our home planet to the heart of the galaxy…
The Milky Way holds wonders beyond imagination.
Earth, the Sun, Sagittarius A, the Orion Nebula, and the Pillars of Creation, each one tells the story of who we are in the universe.

The Farthest: Voyager in space

The James Webb pointed at a patch of sky the size of a grain of sand held at arm's length.
In that tiny spot... thousands of galaxies appeared - each with billions of stars. If so much exists in such a small space... imagine the whole universe.

🔭 SN 2015F was a Type Ia supernova that exploded in 2015 in the galaxy NGC 2442, located approximately 50 million light-years from Earth, in the constellation Volans (the Flying Fish). This type of supernova is caused by a white dwarf that accumulates matter from a companion star until it reaches a critical point and explodes in a thermonuclear reaction.
Discovery: Detected in March 2015 by both amateur and professional astronomers, including the Backyard Observatory Supernova Search (BOSS) project.
Type: Type Ia supernova, used as a "standard candle" in astronomy to measure distances across the universe.
📝 SN 2015F was observed very early after its explosion, allowing scientists to study the initial phases of the event, including the interaction between the supernova and the surrounding material.
Scientific curiosity: A study published in 2016 used observations of SN 2015F to investigate whether the explosion was caused by a system with a giant star companion. The lack of certain expected signals in this scenario suggested that the companion star was likely small or even absent, an important step in understanding the mechanisms behind Type Ia supernovae.
