In the two years since “Imaginal Disk”’s release, @magdalenabay’s sophomore album has evoked the nostalgia of returning to the generational classics the duo revered when they first bonded over the medium. If it sounds in any way cinematic, it’s because Matt and Mica act themselves as both musical and visual artists, carefully envisioning specific characters and narratives for the songs to follow, and therefore creating a world that you can’t help but get lost in. For the end goal of this two-year-long journey to be an accompanying film is by no means a surprise, given just how much it was teased by the band, but for it to be executed as earnestly as the album, the live show or even the costume design and surrounding art direction is simply an achievement in itself. Having directed the music videos for “Death & Romance”, “Image” and “That’s My Floor”, Amanda Kramer returns to direct a purposefully faithful, track-for-track reflection of its musical backdrop that fully understands and expands upon the album’s loosely tied narrative. Combining Kramer’s distinctive approach to campy, unabashed self-discovery with Matt and Mica’s kaleidoscopic, expansive and blissful take on pop music, the film brings the story of True to the big screen. After its world premiere in June at the @tribeca in New York, and subsequent appearances at festivals and theaters in San Francisco, London, Los Angeles, Seoul, and Montreal, Music on Music and @downinthebadlands held a rare, exclusive screening of “Imaginal Disk” on October 7th, 2026 at @passosmanuel_ in Porto, Portugal – the seventh city worldwide to host the film ahead of its wide release. In anticipation, we spoke with Amanda Kramer about the making of the film, the importance of the visual dimension in music, and the passionate reception that “Imaginal Disk” has seen since its release. Music on Music and BADLANDS are excited to present a premiere screening of “Imaginal Disk”, the film based on @magdalenabay’s most recent album, followed by a video interview with the film’s director Amanda Kramer. The event will be held on October 7th 2026 (9:30pm), at @passosmanuel_. Following its world premiere in June at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, the film has screened at festivals and theaters in San Francisco, London, Los Angeles, Seoul, and Montreal. The screening in Porto will mark the seventh city worldwide to host the film ahead of its wide release, scheduled for January 27th, 2027. It will therefore be a rare opportunity to see “Imaginal Disk” in theaters before it becomes available in physical and digital formats. Conceived as a visual accompaniment to the fantasy-like worldbuilding of Magdalena Bay’s widely adored masterwork of the same name, “Imaginal Disk” brings the story of True to the big screen, who is forced to confront her own existence when her body rejects the disk implant designed to unlock the ideal version of herself. Purposefully faithful to its musical backdrop, Matthew Lewin and Mica Tenenbaum find the perfect pairing in visionary director Amanda Kramer (“By Design”, “Please Baby Please”) to form a connective tissue between their kaleidoscopic, expansive and blissful take on pop music and this visually colorful, moving journey of self-discovery.
