At just five years old, Shadia has faced more horror than most can imagine. She lives in Gaza, where for the past three years, children have been forced to endure a depleted education system, severe food scarcity and the constant threat of airstrikes. When a piece of shrapnel struck the back of her neck, there was a moment when others believed she may never be able to move again. “She couldn’t even feel or control her body,” her mother recalls. “She had lost all sensation.” Soon after, she was sent to one of Anera’s health clinics, supported by @tearfund, where the team assessed her condition and laid out a comprehensive plan to begin her healing. Day by day, with her family and Anera’s medical team by her side, Shadia slowly regained her strength. Today, Shadia can walk, which allows to explore the world around her and experience what every child deserves: joy. The kits are equipped with essential supplies that allow them to respond to emergencies at a moment’s notice. Persons with disabilities can face barriers to accessing skills development, practical work experience, and employment opportunities. Through the EU-funded ENABLE programme, the ILO and its partners are working to address these barriers by strengthening pathways to decent work and promoting inclusion in the labour market. By combining skills development with practical workplace experience and engaging employers in disability inclusion, The intervention aims to support the transition from training to employment and promote the meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in the labour market. As part of the European Union-funded ENABLE programme, implemented by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in partnership with the Ministry of Social Affairs (MoSA), Anera is implementing an on-the-job training intervention for persons with disabilities in Lebanon. The intervention combines competency-based, hands-on training with practical workplace experience, supporting 100 participants in North Lebanon to strengthen their skills and gain exposure to real work environments. “Creating pathways to employment for persons with disabilities requires more than skills training alone,” said Samar El Yassir, Anera Country Director for Lebanon and Jordan. “It requires workplaces that are accessible, inclusive, and ready to recognize and support the contributions of persons with disabilities. Through this programme, we are working with both participants and employers to help remove barriers and create more equitable opportunities to enter and participate in the labour market.” By working with both participants and employers, the intervention contributes to more inclusive workplaces and supports persons with disabilities in strengthening their pathways towards decent work. 05 Nov 2026

Saja Abu Seheeban is an English teacher in Gaza at one of Anera’s temporary learning spaces. She’s says that a teacher’s role in Gaza is more important that ever. “Children have experienced so much disruption in their education and their daily lives. They have lost their normal routines, their schools and many of the things that used to make them feel safe and comfortable. We face limited educational materials and resources, too, so as teachers we have to be creative and find different ways to make learning possible. I try to use simple and interactive activities, games, questions, group work and speaking activities to keep students involved. Last night, @Macklemore kicked off his tour in Dublin, Ireland, surrounded by a talented community united by a shared commitment to humanity. Anera is honored to be among the organizations selected to benefit from the tour, with proceeds supporting emergency aid and community-centered programs across Palestine. Music has always had the power to bring people together, inspire action and unite us in the pursuit of something greater. For Palestinians, music, art and creative expression are deeply rooted in history, identity and cultural preservation. Seeing thousands of people come together through song and love in solidarity with the people of Gaza moved us deeply. Anera’s nursing scholarship opens up opportunities for aspiring nurses in Lebanon, such as Atef Najjar. Once he heard about the scholarship, he took all the necessary steps to pursue his dreams. While he says that he got a late start in his career, he assures others that, “It’s never too late.” Since 2023, Anera has provided scholarships to help students pursue their education. Today, 20 scholarships are active across technical nursing and university studies, which helps students develop their skills, enter the workforce, and create stability.
