It was a lifelong dream of mine to pursue filmmaking in America. But when I finally arrived, I found the country undergoing a period of profound social and political upheaval. During the last 3 years I spent there, I found myself caught in a frenzy of so many things unraveling at once. As political and social tensions intensified around me, I watched communities grapple with questions of identity and autonomy. It was interesting to confront the reality of a place I’d dreamed of for so long, to inhabit a place that was never entirely mine. To examine the measure of longing and belonging. Framed by US President Dwight D. One summer, an old painter leaves his seaside home on a final journey. Years earlier in a snowy wilderness, he existed only as the character of a story discussed by a young writer and an aspiring painter. As fiction and reality merge, the story begins to shape their lives. Now old, the painter returns to where that conversation took place. Inspired by The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter and set against the snowy landscapes of Hokkaido, MOONGIRL centers on a single conversation between two isolated characters. Shot independently across multiple seasons in conditions ranging from intense summer heat to -15°C on a frozen lake, the project was completed through a collaboration spanning Japan, France, Germany, Canada, and New Zealand. 05 Aug 2026

FACING THE NUMBERS | Official Trailer So excited to finally be able to share the first look at Facing the Numbers. We’ve been working on this film, on and off, for the past four years, so seeing it reach this point feels incredibly special. It’s been a long journey, and one I’ll always be grateful to have been part of. Facing the Numbers is a documentary that shares the stories of Stolen Generations survivors, and First Nations families who have lost loved ones in custody. Poetic, truthful and deeply moving. In my 15 years at Heckler, this is one of the projects that has stayed with me the most, and I’m incredibly proud to have played a small part in bringing these stories to the screen. A huge thank you to @tysonfperkinsdp for bringing me onto this project, and to @ksat21, @coraldawntapper, and Tyson for the collaboration, generosity and countless conversations along the way.
