Arthur Jafa at his studio in LA. Outtakes from the @m_magazine story earlier this year.

Arthur Jafa’s work is always unmistakably his own—if the 65-year-old Mississippi native was involved in a project, his potent and complex perspective shines through loud and clear.
Naturally, that’s also true of the way Jafa dresses. After falling in love with fashion in the ’80s through Martin Margiela’s boundary-pushing collections, Jafa has grown into one of the consistently most stylish men in contemporary art, with a penchant for freaky Rick Owens concoctions, hardwearing Visvim workwear, and sleek Fear of God tailoring.
With a sprawling survey of his work, 'I Am Tony,' now on display at New York City’s New Museum—and an excellent accompanying catalog out now from Phaidon—@c.fenimore met up with @anamibia to discuss the fashion industry’s relationship to Blackness, his deep love for comic books, and the film projects he hopes to pursue next. “Now, it’s not being pop, it’s just being in the world. Our work is in the world,” says Arthur Jafa.
For Jafa and Mohamed Bourouissa, popular culture isn’t something that sits apart from art. Comics, manga, rap, Marvel, French hip-hop and the images they grew up around exist alongside art history as part of the same visual vocabulary.
Brought together in London for POP, #Issue07 of Dazed MENA, the two artists pick up a conversation that began years ago. In conversation with Tamar Clarke-Brown, they move through representation and its limits, violence and its fallout, instinct, sound, and what happens when work escapes its maker and enters popular culture. A career-spanning survey of the celebrated and resonant work of Arthur Jafa (@anamibia).
Richly illustrated with 165 images representing the full breadth of the artist’s practice — including his films, videos, installations, photographs, and sculptures — ‘I Am Tony’ is an expansive exploration of Jafa’s most acclaimed work.
Accompanying a major solo exhibition at the New Museum (@newmuseum) in New York, the book includes an interview with Jafa by Massimiliano Gioni (@massimilianogioni); a roundtable discussion with Gary Carrion-Murayari, Simone White (@simonefonsiba), Mark Godfrey (@markgodfrey1973), Ekow Eshun (@ekoweshun), Martine Syms (@martinesyms), Hamza Walker and more.
Together, the exhibition and accompanying book will constitute the most comprehensive presentation, to date, of one of the most important and influential artists of this generation.
‘I Am Tony’ is now out worldwide. Shop at the link in bio.

“I grew up with some artists who thought ‘I’m an artist first, not a Black artist,’” Arthur Jafa (@anamibia) tells the New York Times. “They were running away from being Black in order to be seen as ‘universal.’ My art is super-Black. My interests are super-Black. But for me, Black is not a narrow idea.”
“Arthur Jafa: I Am Tony,” the largest survey of the artist’s work to date, opens September 24 at the New Museum. Through prolonged and thoughtful engagement with social media, internet culture, cinematic history, and popular music, Jafa wields an arsenal of images to communicate the complexities of contemporary Black life, along with the way it is both imagined, commodified, and consumed.

Arthur Jafa doesn’t want to tell you what to think. He wants to destabilize what you already believe.

As one of Whitewall’s Summer Impact Issue cover stars, the artist opens up about the power of images, his dialogue with Richard Prince, and “Helter Skelter” at Fondazione Prada in Venice.
