An airliner with the nose of a fighter jet? ✈️👀 Yes, this aircraft actually exists! Called the @Airbus A320 ATRA, it will be used to mature and further develop the new E-Scan radar of the forthcoming Eurofighters for the German and Spanish armed forces. This radar will significantly enhance the Eurofighter's capabilities in air-to-air and air-to-ground operations. Recently, the A320 ATRA completed its commissioning flights, meaning that the flying laboratory has now been fully validated and will commence flight operations at the Airbus site in Manching, Germany. To transform the A320 ATRA into a flying test bed for the new Eurofighter radar, Airbus has joined forces with the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, DLR), who own the aircraft. To accommodate the Eurofighter nose, the A320's fuselage was reinforced and hundreds of metres of data cables were laid. a liquid and air cooling system was also installed to regulate the radar system's temperature. The cabin contains several workstations where experts can access relevant information in real time. They can monitor not only how the hardware performs, but also test new software versions and features in flight. 06 Nov 2026
