Oscar-winning cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw ’02 returned to the Bluff for “CFA Conversations with…” hosted by Dean Alexander, followed by a Q&A with LMU students. The art history alumna shared stories from making “Sinners” with director Ryan Coogler and reflected on the classes, creative interests, and relationships that helped her find her direction. Durald Arkapaw shares how her art history background informed her work on “Sinners,” helping her recreate the atmosphere and emotion of that era. For “Sinners,” Durald Arkapaw and Coogler took on 65mm, a larger film format that captures more detail for the big screen. She reflects on becoming the first woman to shoot a feature film on 65mm, learning to work with the camera, and why the chance to try something difficult made the experience even more exciting. Durald Arkapaw shares how the iconic church scene in “Sinners” became one of her favorite scenes to film. She recalls how the congregation, costumes, and music made the setting feel like stepping into 1930s Mississippi, creating a connection to the past that stayed with her long after filming. LMU students got to talk about art history and film with the award-winning cinematographer behind “Sinners.” Back on the Bluff, Durald Arkapaw answered their questions about working behind the camera and shared why her own perspective matters as much as the equipment she brings to set. In March this year, Autumn Durald Arkapaw became the first woman in the Oscars’ 97-year history to win the award for best cinematography for her work on Ryan Coogler’s 𝘚𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴.⁠ ⁠ ⁠ Arguably Autumn was destined to be in the movies. Her parents named her after 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘺𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘦 𝘈𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘮𝘯, John Ford’s 1964 epic Western. By age 20, she was cutting iMovies of her friends hanging out, soundtracking them herself.
